WHEELING, W. Va. – It will be a matchup of the last two NCAA Division II Atlantic Region champions at 7:30 p.m. Friday night when Clarion takes on Wheeling Jesuit in the Atlantic Region semifinals in Wheeling.
Clarion (24-11), the fourth seed and the 2010 Region champions, advanced to the Regional semifinals with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-23) win over fifth-seeded Lock Haven Thursday while top-seeded Wheeling Jesuit (36-2), the 2011 Regional champions and the 18
th ranked team in the nation by the AVCA, toppled eighth-seeded Fayetteville St. 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-10) Thursday as well.
This is the second meeting this season between the schools with Wheeling Jesuit taking a 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-19) win over the Golden Eagles Oct. 27 in Clarion.
On offense, the Golden Eagles are led by senior middle hitter
Rebecca Webb (2.5 kills pet set, .314 hitting percentage), junior opposite-side hitter
Hannah Heeter (2.27 kps, .257 hitting), outside hitters
Emily Stewart (2.65 kps), a junior, and
Carlie Bieranowski (2.3 kps), a sophomore, and junior middle hitter
Corinne Manley (1.38 kps), while sophomore setter
Laura Subject (9.59 set assists per set, 86 kills) runs the show.
Defensively, senior Libero
Rebecca Ferragonio (5.04 digs per set) keys things while Stewart adds 2.14 digs per set, Bieranowski 2.2 digs per set, Subject 2.53 digs per set and Heeter 1.59 digs per set, 0.82 blocks per set. Manley leads the blocking efforts with 0.91 per set with Webb adding 0.89 per set.
In the first-round victory over Lock Haven, Heeter had 12 kills and four blocks while hitting .360, Bieranowski added 10 kills and eight digs while hitting .308, Stewart had 10 kills and seven digs, Subject had 36 set assists and 10 digs and Ferragonio 19 digs.
Wheeling Jesuit is led by WVIAC Player of the Year Jenna Pew who checks in with 3.17 kills per set while hitting .333. Pew also adds 3.96 set assists per set, 1.8 digs per set and 1.07 blocks per set. She had six kills, three blocks and three digs in the win over Fayetteville.
Also for the Cardinals, Allissa Ware has averages 3.47 kills and 2.71 digs per set with Abby Wietrzykowski chipping in 2.68 kills per set. Ware had 12 kills and Wietrzykowski five in the first-round victory.
Madison Strall runs the offense with 6.20 set assists per set while adding 2.48 digs per set. She had 18 assists in the Fayetteville St. match.
In the Oct. 27 match at Clarion, Ware had 12 kills while Pew had seven kills and 18 assists with Strall adding six kills, 15 assists and 12 digs. Clarion was led by Stewart's six kills and five digs, while Webb had five kills. Subject chipped in 21 assists and four digs with Ferragonio getting 14 digs.
NOTES – The winner of this match plays the winner of the other semifinals match between California and Gannon at 7 p.m. Saturday in Wheeling for the right to go to the Elite Eight … This is the second time Clarion and Wheeling have met in the NCAA Division II playoffs. Clarion defeated the Cardinals 3-1 in the 2010 Regional semifinals at Edinboro … Clarion is 4-10 all-time vs. Wheeling Jesuit including 1-3 in Wheeling.
