VOLLEYBALL DROPS 3-2 DECISION AT EDINBORO

Emily Stewart

Box Score EDINBORO – Despite 23 kills and 14 digs from Emily Stewart, the Clarion University women's volleyball team was upset, 3-2, by Edinboro Friday night in Edinboro.

Clarion (23-9 overall, 13-5 PSAC West) led 2-1 thanks to wins of 25-23 in the first set and 25-21 in the third set sandwiched between a 25-18 second-set Fighting Scot win.

But Edinboro (10-22, 6-12) rallied to win the final two sets by scores of 25-20 and 15-13.

In the fourth set, Clarion led 17-16 following a Stewart kill only to watch Edinboro finish the set on a 9-3 run. Then in the fifth set, the Golden Eagles rallied from 12-9 down to tie the set at 13 only to see the Fighting Scots take the final two points and the match.

Rebecca Webb added 11 kills and seven digs, while Hannah Heeter had 10 kills, six digs, four blocks and five set assists. Backup setter Rebecca Beightol had 42 set assists and 11 digs, and Rebecca Ferragonio chipped in with 24 digs.

The loss eliminates Clarion from a home PSAC playoff spot. The Golden Eagles can finish no higher than third in the PSAC West because even with a win Saturday at Gannon (7:30 p.m.) and a California loss to Mercyhurst that would tie both Clarion and Cal in the West at 14-6, Cal wins the tiebreaker having beaten Clarion by a combined score of 6-2 this season. Clarion can finish third with a win over Gannon or a Mercyhurst loss to California. But a Mercyhurst win and a Clarion loss would most likely put the Lakers as the third seed and the Golden Eagles as the fourth seed.

Clarion, which has qualified for the PSAC Playoffs for the fourth straight year, is also ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region. The Golden Eagles are looking for their ninth NCAA Division II playoff berth in the past 11 years.
