EAGLES LOSE TO #10 NORTHWESTERN (26-9) & #20 EDINBORO (28-12)
(Edinboro,Pa.): Clarion won three bouts against #10 rated Northwestern and three against #20 ranked Edinboro on Sunday
, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles lost a hard fought 26-9 decision to the Wildcats and a 28-12 matchup to Edinboro at McComb Fieldhouse.
In the other dual meet Sunday afternoon, #20 Edinboro upset #10 Northwestern 22-15.
Clarion's
James Fleming at 157, Ryan Darch at 174 and Justin Ortega at 197 scored victories for the Golden Eagles in the match against Edinboro.
With Clarion already down 16-0 in team score heading to 157, Fleming wasted little time posting a takedown in the first period, then scored two, three-point near falls before pinning Casey Fuller at 1:22. He raised his season record to 16-1, having lost earlier in the day to #2 ranked Jason Welch of Northwestern.
Darch won an exciting 2-0 match over Patrick Jennings at 174. Darch escaped in the second period, then rode Jennings the entire third period to win 2-0.
Ortega, who nearly upset #17 ranked Alex Polizzi of Northwestern in his opener, posted a solid 4-1 win over Warren Bosch at 197. Ortega had a first period takedown, second period escape and riding time for the win.
Tyler Fraley lost a 10-6 decision to Kory Mines at 125, while the Edinboro's #4 ranked A.J. Schopp pinned
Joe Waltko at 133 and #4 rated Mitchell Port major decisioned
John Matacic 10-2 at 141. Edinboro's #15 David Habat then won 6-1 over
Tyler Bedelyon at 149 to put Edinboro ahead 16-0.
After Fleming's win,
Nick Milano lost a 12-6 decision to John Greisheimer at 165, and after Darch's win,
Steve Cressley was pinned by Vince Pickett at 184.
Ortega won at 197 and
Phil Catrucco lost a 4-1 decision to #16 rated Ernest James at 285.
The Northwestern dual started with an exciting bout that Clarion's
Tyler Fraley lost 4-3 in the second tie breaker to #15 rated Dominick Malone at 125. Trailing in the third period, Fraley scored a takedown with 28-seconds left in regulation to tie the bout 2-2. Both wrestlers earned escapes in the first tie breaker, with Malone escaping in the second to produce the win.
Northwestern's #9 rated Levi Mele won a 10-3 decision over
Joe Waltko at 133, but the Eagles rallied back when
Sam Sherlock provided a 9-7 win over
Jameson Oster at 141 and
Tyler Bedelyon decisioned Pasquale Greco 5-2 at 149.
Sherlock got off to a quick start with a five-point move against Oster. A second period takedown still had Sherlock ahead 7-5 after two periods. Two Sherlock escapes sandwiched around an Oster takedown made the final score 9-7.
Clarion's Bedelyon had takedowns in the first and second period to win 5-2 over Pasquale Greco, which tied the team score at 6-6.
The much anticipated matchup between #2 Jason Welch and
Clarion's #3 James Fleming saw Welch posted a 10-1 major decision over Fleming. After several flurries in the first period, Welch scored a counter takedown, then caught Fleming in a back roll for a three-point near fall and a 5-0 first period lead. Another counter takedown in the second and a reversal in the third and riding time, along with a Fleming escape made the final score 10-1.
Clarion's
Nick Milano lost a 13-3 major decision to #10 rated Pierce Harger at 165, and #8 Leroy Munster had a 16-0 tech fall win over
Ryan Darch at 174 to give the Wildcats a 19-9 lead.
The Eagles
Steven Cressley posted a 5-3 win over Marcus Shrewsbury at 184. Down 3-1 in the second period, Cressley's takedown tied the score, then went ahead 5-3 in the third when he reversed Shrewsbury with about 1:10 left and then rode Shrewsbury out to win 5-3.
Clarion's
Justin Ortega nearly pulled a big upset at 197, but lost 9-7 to #17 rated Alex Polizzi. Ortega used a cradle for a five-point move to open the first period and nearly pinned Polizzi and couple times. Polizzi came back in the third period, trailing 7-3, with an escape and his own five-point move to win 9-7.
At heavyweight #7 rated Mike McMullan defeated Clarion's
Phil Catrucci 12-0 to make the final score 26-9.
Clarion's record moves to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in the EWL. The Golden Eagles host Pitt on Friday at Tippin Gym with match time set for 7pm.
