HOT SHOOTING SECOND HALF LEADS CLARION PAST KUTZTOWN

Marques Jones had a season-high 17 points to go with 5 assists

Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. – A hot-shooting second half propelled the Clarion University men's basketball team to a 69-57 win over Kutztown in the Golden Eagles first road game of the season Tuesday night.
 
Clarion (3-4 overall, 2-2 PSAC West) trailed 28-21 at halftime after shooting just 26.9 percent (7 of 26) in the first half before catching fire in the second half nailing 14 of 25 shots in the half (56 percent) including 7 of 11 three-pointers (63.6 percent).
 
The hot shooting allowed the Golden Eagles to go on runs of 17-4, 16-5 and 11-0 in the half.
 
The 17-4 spurt came in the first five minutes of the half allowing Clarion to take a 38-32 lead on a Marques Jones three at the 14:48 mark. Jones and Leonard Patterson each had six points during the run.
 
Kutztown (2-7, 1-3 PSAC East) rallied with a 6-0 mini-run of its own to tie the game at 38 less than a minute later before the Golden Eagles answered with the 16-5 run that featured six points from Calvin Edwards and five from Jones tot take a 54-43 lead with just under seven minutes left.
 
The homestanding Golden Bears rallied once more and closed the gap to four, 58-54, before Clarion put the game away with the 11-0 run that featured nine points coming from the free-throw line (9 of 10) in the final 2:22. Patterson was a perfect 6 of 6 from the line for six points during the run, while Jones added four points while going 2 of 2 from the line.
 
Patterson led Clarion with 18 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Jones added a season-high 17 points while trying a season-best with five assists and going 6 of 12 from the field with season-high three triples. Edwards also had a season high with 15 points (equaling is total production of his last four prior games) while adding six rebounds and two assists and going 4 of 8 shooting including 3 of 6 from three-point range. Mike Kromka chipped in with 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
 
Micah Fraction led all scorers with 21 points for Kutztown while Ryan Connolly had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Tyler Brooks added 11 points and seven rebounds.
 
Clarion returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at East Stroudsburg.
 
NOTES – Clarion hit a season-high 11 three-pointers in the game … 15 of Jones' 17 points came in the second half, while Patterson scored 12 of his 18 after halftime.
