GOLDEN EAGLES DROP OT THRILLER TO EAST STROUDSBURG

Box Score EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – East Stroudsburg outscored Clarion 16-9 in overtime to get a 76-69 win over the visiting Golden Eagles in PSAC crossover play Wednesday night.
 
Clarion (5-5 overall, 2-3 PSAC West) trailed by 11, 56-45, with just under six minutes to play before going on a 15-4 run to take a 60-58 lead with 47 seconds left in regulation on a three-pointer by Tania Holmes. But Ryan Fiascki hit a layup with 33 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 60, and both teams missed chances to go ahead in the final 10 seconds sending the game to overtime.
 
Hannah Heeter, who recorded her second straight double-double for Clarion with 18 points and 14 rebounds, had a shot blocked by Jessica Martin with 10 seconds left, and Andrea Veres missed a three-pointer with one tick to play for East Stroudsburg.
 
In the extra session, the teams traded points to start the extra session before four quick points by the Warriors gave them a 66-62 lead.
 
Heeter, who added three blocks, two assists and two steals, got the Golden Eagles back within two with a pair of free throws with 59 seconds left in the extra session.  
 
But Bard Borst nailed a three-pointer eight seconds later to put the lead to five, and East Stroudsburg hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final 26 seconds to seal the win.
 
Holmes added 14 points and four assists for Clarion, while Leisha Crawford had 10 points.
 
Four East Stroudsburg players hit double figures led by 13 points from Fiascki, 12 each from Andrea Veres and Jessica Martin and 11 from Steph Cabald. Martin completed a double-double with 12 rebounds, while Fiascki had seven assists and six rebounds.
 
East Stroudsburg (4-5, 3-2 PSAC East), which made eight fewer shots from the field than Clarion (31 to 23) and shot 34.8 percent to the Golden Eagles' 44.3 percent, took advantage of solid three-point shooting (8 of 20) and great free-throw shooting (22 of 28) to overcome that disadvantage. Clarion was 3 of 10 from beyond the arc and 4 of 7 from the line. The Golden Eagles were called for 21 fouls to East Stroudsburg's 13.
 
Clarion trailed 30-22 at halftime thanks to a half-ending 7-3 East Stroudsburg run before the Warriors got the lead up to 11, 56-45, with 5:58 to play in regulation.  
 
The Golden Eagles, though, rallied behind six points from Heeter and five from Holmes to take their first lead since 15-14 on the Holmes three with 47 seconds left in regulation.
 
Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 4 when it hosts West Chester.
 
NOTES – The loss snapped Clarion's three-game win streak … Heeter, who is averaging 16.3 points and 12.2 rebounds per game in six games this year, has three double-doubles on the season and 16 in her career, the ninth most in school history … Holmes' 14 points were a season high, and she has hit double digits in two straight games and three times on the year … Crawford recorded her third straight double-digit performance and the fourth of her young career … The overtime game was Clarion's first of the season and the first since beating California 72-69 in Clarion Jan. 25 … The loss snapped a four-game overtime win streak for the Golden Eagles who last lost in extra time Feb. 18, 2006, at home to California … It was the first road overtime game for Clarion since an 83-80 win over West Chester Dec. 11, 2009.
