Box Score CLARION –
Hannah Heeter scored 28 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, and
Emma Fickel had a career-high 26 points while adding six rebounds and three assists to lead the Clarion University women's basketball team to a 78-62 win over visiting Lock Haven Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.
For Heeter, a freshman who shot 13 of 19 from the floor and also had three assists, two blocks and two steals, it was her sixth game of 15 or more rebounds this season. She is one of three players in school history with six or more games of 15 rebounds in a season joining Heather Cigich and Shay Godwin who had seven and six respectively in 2004. She is also one of four players in school history to grab 15 or more rebounds at least six times in a career joining Cigich (16), Godwin (11) and Mona Gaffney (7). She has 236 rebounds on the season, the fifth most a Clarion freshman.
Fickel, meanwhile, bested her previous career high of 24 points set last year vs. Cheyney. It was her second consecutive 20-point game, and she hit six three-pointers tying a career high.
Clarion used an 11-2 run that started with just under seven minutes to play to break open a two-point lead and get the victory. Heeter had eight of the points during the run that took a 52-50 lead and turned it into a 63-52 advantage with 3:56 to play.
The Golden Eagles then salted the game away by going 8 of 8 from the free-throw line down the stretch including four apiece from Fickel and
Ann Deibert, who finished with six points and five rebounds.
Four Lock Haven players reached double digits led by 11 points from Lysa Mealing, who also had seven rebounds. Heather McHugh and Mahogany Spence each added 10 points and four rebounds with Spence also having four assists, while Sharay Hall had 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Raven Jones added eight assists, seven points and two steals for Clarion, while
Aleya Miller had six points and seven rebounds.
Clarion led 33-28 at halftime thanks in part to an 11-0 run later in the half that saw Fickel score five points and Heeter four. The run took a one-point deficit, 21-20, and turned it into a 31-21 lead with 3:09 left in the half.
The Golden Eagles then pushed the lead to 10, 52-42, midway through the second half before Lock Haven made one last push going on an 8-0 run to close it to the 52-50 score with Heeter on the bench in foul trouble. But when the rookie reentered the game, she scored six straight points to help restore the lead back to double digits.
Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Edinboro on Senior Night. It will be the home-season finale for the Golden Eagles.
NOTES – Heeter, who is averaging 12.7 points and 11.2 rebounds per game on the year, needs four more rebounds to ensure that she becomes the first Clarion freshman since Cheryl Bansek in 1986 to average a double-double for an entire season. She would be the first Golden Eagle to average a season double-double since Cigich and Godwin both did it in 2004 … Heeter has 10 double-doubles on the season, the most by a Clarion freshman since Cigich had 13 in 2002. All 10 double-doubles have come since Jan. 6.
