MERRITT WINS 1 METER AT PITT INVITE

FINAL RESULTS
 
            (Pittsburgh, Pa.): Clarion diver Ethan Merritt (So. San Luis Obispo, Ca.) won the one meter diving competition, but the Golden Eagle Men's Swimming and Diving team lost at the Pitt Invitational on Saturday.
 
            With swimming held at Trees Pool at Pitt and diving held at Carnegie Mellon, the Golden Eagles lost dual meets to Pitt (215-66), Carnegie Mellon (156-129) and Grove City (148-138). Clarion finished its dual meet season with a record of 4-5.
 
            In diving, the Golden Eagles had a top day against D-I divers from Pitt as well as CMU. Merritt won the one meter competition scoring 281.90 points while also finishing fifth in 3 meter (263.0).
 
            Teammate Seth Brandenburg (So. Canton, Ohio) was second on one meter with 268 points and also fourth on 3 meter with 275.95 points. Also placing were Justin Duncan (Sr. South Park), who was 3rd on 3 meter (286.95) and 5th on 1 meter (247.85), while Heath Calhoun (Fr. Renfrew/Butler) was 4th on 1 meter (250.80) and 6th on 3 meter (260.80).
 
            In the pool Derek Nelson (So. Mt. Joy) was third in the 100 breaststroke (59.89) and Scott Harvey (So. Macungie) was third in the 500 free (4:53.65).
 
            Clarion's Joe Ward (Jr. Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) was fourth in the 100 backstroke (55.47), Joey Hufnagel (Fr. Irwin/Penn Trafford) 4th in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.98), Matt Bojalad (Jr. DuBois) 5th in the 50 free (22.12) and Eric Beichner (So. Venus/Cranberry) 5th in the 200 back (2:03.04) and 6th in the 100 backstroke (55.82).
 
            The 200 medley relay team of Ward, Mark Krchnak (Jr. Clearfield), Joe Welch (Jr. Erie/Strong Vincent) and Bojalad placed second with a time of 1:37.74. The 200 free relay team of Ward, Bojalad, Casey Dunleavy (Jr. McMurray) and Ben Appleby (Jr. York) finished third with a time of 1:26.25.
 
            Clarion, under 12th year head coach Mark VanDyke, has now finished its season dual meet swimming schedule. The Golden Eagles will participate at the PSAC Championships Feb. 16-19.
