Box Score ERIE –
Hannah Heeter became the first Clarion freshman to record 200 rebounds in a season in a decade, but the Golden Eagles dropped an 84-56 decision at Mercyhurst Wednesday night in PSAC West women's basketball action.
Heeter pulled down nine rebounds and just missed her ninth double-double of the season finishing with 13 points as well as four steals and two blocked shots. But Clarion (6-15, 5-12 PSAC West) couldn't keep pace with a hot-shooting Mercyhurst squad that hit 52.4 percent (33 of 63) of its shots including 12 of 23 (52.2 percent) of its three-pointers while having 10 players reach the scorebook.
Dana Banda led the Lakers (11-10, 9-8) with 18 points, while Megan Hoffman added 16 and Kaylee Foster 13.
Emma Fickel chipped in 11 points and
Mackenzie Clark 10 for Clarion.
Mercyhurst used a pair of big runs to take control of the game. The Lakers used a 22-2 run in the first half to build a 34-13 advantage on their way to a 30-23 halftime lead, and then, after Clarion had gotten within 11 – 45-34 – early in the second half Mercyhurst went on a 33-3 run to put the game away.
Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Gannon.
NOTES – Heeter has 203 rebounds, the first Clarion freshman to 200 since Heather Cigich had 241 in 2002. Heeter moved past Mona Gaffney (200 in 1993) into seventh place in freshman rebounding at Clarion. She needs five to tie Lisa Zitalone for sixth and 10 to match Sharon Henry for fifth … Fickel's three treys gives her 137 in her career moving her into sole possession of sixth place in school history. She entered the game tied with Katrina Greer with 134. Fickel also needs two three-pointers for 50 on the year, at which point she would become the first Golden Eagle with back-to-back seasons of 50 or more three-pointers since Amelia Harris in 2004 and 2005 … Clarion had a season-low 16 turnovers in the game.
