NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Thanks to a pair of wins in two wild and exciting games Thursday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Clarion University softball team pushed their season record to 5-3.
The Golden Eagles got a walk-off hit from
Lydia Middaugh in the bottom of the seventh to beat Arcadia 7-6 and then rebounded from a blown 9-3 lead to score three times in the top of the eighth to top Lycoming 12-11.
In the first game of the day, Clarion fell behind Arcadia 4-0 after a half inning but rallied to take a 6-4 lead with a pair of three-run innings. Arcadia, though, tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh.
But in the bottom of the inning,
Taylor Sherry was hit by a pitch leading off,
Kirsten Wilcox then singled and
Sara Clark walked to load the bases for Middaugh who delivered the game-winning hit.
Julie Sokol got the win for Clarion going seven innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits and a walk while striking out two.
Rebecca Lynch led a 15-hit outburst going 3-for-4 with a run scored an RBI. Middaugh,
Kacie Nemeth and
Taylor Powell each went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
In the second game of the day, Clarion took an 8-1 lead after five innings and led 9-3 going to the bottom of the seventh before Lycoming rallied to tie the game with a six-run seventh.
Chelsea Zola, in relief of
Megan Daley, kept the game tied by recording the third out of the seventh on a fly out with runners at second and third.
Then in the top of the eighth, Clarion scored three times as Clark, who had started at second thanks to the international tiebreaker rule, scored when
Elizabeth Shiring reached on an error. Lynch then singled home
Kelly Peterson, who had singled with one out and Shiring scored on a groundout by Powell.
Lycoming tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth and scored twice before Zola closed the door.
Zola got the win going 1 1/3 innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits. Daley pitched 6 2/3 and was charged with nine runs, seven earned, on 13 hits and four walks while striking out three.
Clarion pounded out 18 hits in the game with Lynch and Powell each going 4-for-6. Lynch had a run scored and two RBIs with Powell driving home one and scoring one. Peterson was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Wilcox was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Sherry was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
The two games Thursday wrapped up Clarion's Spring Break trip to South Carolina. The Golden Eagles return to action Wednesday when they host Edinboro in the home-opening doubleheader. The first game is slated to start at 2:30 p.m.
NOTES – Clarion had two hitters hit .500 in the trip to South Carolina. Wilcox hit .556 (15 of 27) with seven RBIs and nine runs scored while Powell hit .500 (15 of 30) with three doubles, seven RBIs and seven runs scored.
