CLARION – Freshman Kelly Peterson's two-out, line-drive single to center scored Taylor Powell from third base to cap a three-run seventh inning and give Clarion a 4-3 win over Edinboro in Game One of a PSAC crossover softball doubleheader Wednesday at Clarion.

The Golden Eagles (6-4), who lost Game Two 5-2, trailed 3-1 going to the seventh but loaded the bases with no one out on a single to center by Rebecca Lynch, a hit batter (Kirsten Wilcox) and a single to right by Powell. Taylor Sherry then drew a bases-loaded walk to score Lynch making it 3-2, and Sara Clark lined a single off the centerfielder's glove bringing home Wilcox with the tying run. But on the play, Powell held at third, and Sherry got caught going to third not realizing Powell was still there for the first out of the inning leaving runners on first and third for Amanda Gough. Gough popped out against relief pitcher Amanda Shield, who relieved Kari Falk after the Clark single. But Peterson, who was a member of Clarion High School's PIAA Class A runner-up team last year, game up with the clutch single up the middle to win the game.

Edinboro had led 3-0 after 4 ½ innings scoring an unearned run in the first off starter Shawnna Crago and then nicking Crago for two more unearned runs in the fifth before Chelsea Zola relieved with two on and one out and got the Golden Eagles out of the jam.

Clarion then scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning when Sherry singled home Lynch, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

The Golden Eagles outhit Edinboro 10-4 in the game with Wilcox going 2-for-3 with a run scored and Clark and Peterson each going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sherry was 1-for-1 with three walks and two RBIs.

Zola got the win going 2 2/3 innings in relief of Crago and allowing just one base runner on a base hit. Crago went 4 1/3 allowing three unearned runs on three hits and four walks.

In Game Two, Edinboro used a three-run third to build a 4-0 lead before Clarion got solo home run from Sherry, the first of the freshman's career, in the fourth to make it 4-1. The Fighting Scots answered with a run in the top of the seventh before Clarion rallied for one in the bottom of the inning Lynch singled home Gough with two outs.

Gough, who is playing her third sport of the year for the Golden Eagles (volleyball and basketball were the other two), the first three-sport athlete for Clarion in recent memory, was 2-for-3 with the run scored. Sherry was also 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Wilcox was 2-for-3.

Julie Sokol took the loss going seven innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on 12 hits and a walk while striking out one.

Clarion returns to action Thursday at Seton Hill.
