Box Score 2 INDIANA, Pa. – Despite getting season best in strikeouts by both of its freshmen pitchers Friday, the Clarion University softball team was swept in a PSAC Central doubleheader at IUP.
Julie Sokol punched out a season-best nine in a 4-3 Game Two loss, while
Shawnna Crago had a season-high six strikeouts in a 5-0 Game One loss that saw her all just one earned runs.
Sokol allowed four runs in Game Two, three of which were earned, on six hits and two walks.
In Game One, Crago allowed the five runs, only one earned, on six hits and a walk.
Kacie Nemeth and
Rebecca Lynch had nice days at the plate for the Golden Eagles (8-30 overall, 0-14 PSAC Central) with each player collecting three hits in the doubleheader.
Nemeth was 2-for-4 with an RBI in Game Two after picking up one of Clarion's two hits in Game One, while Lynch was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in Game Two after also recording a hit in the first game. Lynch has now hit safely in four straight games and in 12 of her last 14 to raise her average to .344, while Nemeth has hit safely in 8 of her last 11 games and is now batting .304.
In Game Two, Clarion took a 3-1 lead with a three-run third inning. Lynch and Nemeth each had RBI singles in the inning with
Taylor Powell adding an RBI on a bunt out.
But IUP, which had scored the game's first run with a marker in the first, retook the lad with a three-run fourth. Clarion tried to rally in the seventh when
Amanda Gough ripped a one-out double, but Gough was stranded at second. The Golden Eagles also had the tying run at second with one out in the fifth and couldn't push the runner home.
In the first game, IUP took a 1-0 lead in the second before scoring four unearned runs in the fifth.
Clarion is slated to conclude its season with a 1 p.m. twinbill at home vs. Bloomsburg Saturday.
NOTES – Sokol's previous high for strikeouts was five accomplished twice including April 6 vs. IUP and March 13 vs. Suffolk … Crago's previous high in strikeouts was four accomplished April 7 vs. Bloomsburg and Tuesday vs. Slippery Rock.
