CLARION HONORS 154 ON NCAA STUDENT ATHLETE DAY

L-R - Baseball's Jerico Weitzel & Scott Berkes - Part of the 154 Honored Today

(Clarion, Pa.): The Clarion University Athletic Department is honoring 154 student-athletes (47.4%) today as the NCAA marks its 25th celebration of National Student-Athlete Day on Friday, April 6, 2012. The NCAA honors student athletes who have achieved a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in their careers.

Counting each student-athlete only once, even if they participate in multiple sports,  the Golden Eagles have 154 student athletes with a current cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher – out of 325 total student athletes. That means that 47.4% of Clarion's student-athletes will receive honors today since they are maintaining a 3.0 or above grade point average.

“We are very proud of our student-athletes in the classroom and on the athletic field of play,” said Clarion Athletic Director Dave Katis. “Our main mission is to prepare our student-athletes for their academic careers. We are blessed to have quality student-athletes, coaches, faculty and administrators help our student-athletes reach those goals.”

The National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports and Northeastern University's Sport In Society. It is co-sponsored with the NCAA and the National Federation of State high School Associations.

CLARION NOTES: Clarion also recently honored 136 of its student-athletes (40%) at its Bob Carlson Scholar Athlete Luncheon held on February 3, 2012… A student-athlete must have a 3.2 GPA or two semesters of 3.2 or above to earn those awards.
