VOLLEYBALL RALLIES PAST MERCYHURST

Laura Subject's 60 set assists were the most in a match for Clarion since 2004

Box Score ERIE, Pa. – Rallying from a 2-0 hole, the Clarion University women's volleyball team rallied to beat Mercyhurst 3-2 in Erie Friday night.

The Golden Eagles (17-1 overall, 7-1 PSAC West) dropped the first two sets 25-21 and 32-30 before winning the next three by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 17-15.

The fifth-and-final set was an exciting one that saw Clarion build a 10-6 lead and hold a 12-9 advantage before Mercyhurst took control with five of the next six points to get within a point of the match with a 14-13 lead. But the Golden Eagles tied the set at 14 on a Hannah Heeter kill before the Lakers (12-6, 6-2) once again went in front 15-14. Again it was Clarion staving off match point on Corinne Manley kill. The Golden Eagles then went up 16-15 with an attack error by Mercyhurst before Manley and Laura Subject came up with a block on the match-winning point.

Emily Stewart led Clarion with 22 kills, 18 digs and three blocks, while Heeter added 20 kills and five digs. Carlie Bieranowski added a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs, Kelly Shannon had 11 kills and Manley nine kills and five blocks.

Subject had 69 set assists, the most by a Golden Eagle since Ashley Kreiner also had 69 Oct. 2, 2004, vs. Mt. Olive while adding 21 digs. Morgan Seybold led the defense with 34 digs.

Clarion returns to action Saturday at Gannon.
