Box Score CLARION, Pa. –
DeMarius Miller became the first Clarion University men's basketball player to score 30 or more points in back-to-back games in nearly 20 years, but the Golden Eagles couldn't hold a seven-point second-half lead and lost 82-80 in overtime to visiting Kutztown Tuesday night at Tippin Gym.
Miller, who became the first Golden Eagle to have back-to-back 30 point game since Kwame Morton did so in February 1994, netted 34 points one game after recording a career-high 42 points Sunday vs. Penn State-Beaver, but Kutztown's Austin Beidelman scored eight of his team's final 14 points including the game-tying layup with 4.9 seconds left in regulation and then the first four Golden Bears points in overtime.
Clarion (2-4) led by seven, 65-58, following a
Darius Stevens layup with 3:57 to play in regulation but was outscored 12-5 down the stretch partly because the Golden Eagles went 3 of 7 from the free-throw line in the game's final three minutes.
Still, Clarion looked to be in good shape when they got the offensive rebound off a missed free throw by Miller with 25 seconds left leading 70-68. But
BJ Andrews stepped out of bounds on the ensuing inbounds play giving the ball back to Kutztown.
The Golden Bears (3-4) then got the game-tying layup from Beidelman, who had a team-high 27 points, to knot the game at 70.
Clarion pushed the ball up court trying for the win, but Miller slipped and was called for a walk with just over a second to play.
In overtime, Beidelman's quick four points helped Kutztown start the extra session on a 9-3 run that gave the Golden Bears a 79-73 lead with 59 seconds to play.
Clarion fought back and got within two, 79-77, when Miller hit one of two free throws with 29 seconds left.
Austin Ford then hit one of two charity shots for Kutztown with 26 seconds to play, and Clarion called timeout with just under 20 seconds left.
Out of the timeout, Miller tried a long-range 3-pointer that was off the mark, and Beidelman hit two free throws to make it 82-77 with four seconds to play before Miller drained a long-range three just before the horn to set the final score.
Steven had a double-double for Clarion with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Andrews added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.
