Box Score CLARION, Pa. – With her team tied with winless Mansfield at the under 12-minute timeout of the second half, Clarion head coach Gie Parsons challenged her squad during the break.
And the Golden Eagles answered with a 16-4 run that propelled them to a 60-46 win over the visiting Mountaineers Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.
The game was tied at 35 after Clarion's
Kelly Johnson hit one of two free throws with 12:21 to play, and after the media timeout
Emma Fickel gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good with a 3-pointer at the 11:52 mark.
That three started the spurt that changed the game and included six different Golden Eagles scoring including four points from
Hannah Heeter and three from
Tania Holmes. It was a Holmes three at the 5:59 mark that gave the Golden Eagles (3-5 overall) their largest lead of the game to that point at 51-39.
Mansfield (0-10) never got closer than seven the rest of the way, and Clarion put the contest away by hitting 8 of 11 free throws in the final 1:45.
Heeter had another double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, her third in three games this season and the 32
nd of her career in 52 games, with 12 points and 15 rebounds. The 15 boards extended her school record for games with 15 or more rebounds to 19.
Jasmine Boyd led the Golden Eagles with 14 points while adding nine rebounds, and Fickel also had 12 points to go with four boards, two assists, a block and a steal.
Raven Jones chipped in four points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals, while Holmes and Johnson each had seven points with Johnson also handing out three helpers and coming away with three steals.
Mansfield, losers of 13 straight, got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Jena Matter and 11 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists from Katie Fitzpatrick.
In the first half, Clarion went nearly seven minutes without making a shot but only trailed Mansfield by two at the half. The Golden Eagles shot only 29.4 percent in the first half.
The game was a low-scoring affair in the first half with Mansfield holding Clarion without a point for nearly a seven-minute period which helped the Mountaineers take a 24-22 lead at the break.
Mansfield then got the advantage to as many as four, 30-26, early in the second half before a quick 8-1 run by Clarion that featured points from four different players gave the Golden Eagles a 34-31 advantage with 13:37 to play before Mansfield took its final lead of the game, 35-34, on a Bridger Carney layup with 12:29 left.
Clarion is back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lock Haven.
