Raven Jones scored a career-high 31 points, and
Hannah Heeter had another big double-double to help the Clarion University women's basketball team shake off a slow start and beat Lock Haven 87-77 Wednesday night at Thomas Fieldhouse in Lock Haven.
Jones scored 20 of her points after halftime and added six rebounds and three steals in the game, and Heeter had 14 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal to help Clarion overcome a 17-point first-half deficit and a seven-point disadvantage midway through the second half.
Clarion (13-13 overall, 9-11 PSAC West) trailed 40-23 with just over five minutes to go in the first half before going on a 20-3 run that featured six points by Heeter and four from Jones to tie the game at 43 early in the second half.
But Lock Haven (7-17, 4-16) surged back ahead on the strength of a 14-7 run to go back ahead by seven, 57-50, on two Maryssa Moyer free throws with 11:39 to play.
The Golden Eagles answered once again using a 17-5 run fueled by seven points from Jones and six from
Lauren Savulchak, who finished with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal, to retake the lead for good.
An old-school three by Savulchak with 8:18 left gave Clarion the lead for good at 63-62, and Jones capped the run with a layup at the 7:31 mark putting the Golden Eagles in front 67-62.
Lock Haven fought back and twice closed within one, the last time being at 69-68 with 5:08 to play. But a quick 10-0 spurt by the Golden Eagles that included five more points from Jones, who shot 13 of 17 from the field including 3 of 4 from three-point range, but Clarion up 11, 79-68, with 2:36 to play.
The final four points of the last run came from the free-throw line starting a game-ending stretch that saw the Golden Eagles shoot 12 of 12 from the line in the final 2:56.
The last flurry of free throws helped Clarion shoot 30 of 36 (83.3 percent) from the line in the game. The 30 made charity shots ties for the seventh most in a game in school history and are the most in a game by Clarion since hitting 30 at home vs. Cheyney Dec. 10, 2011. It is the most road made free throws by the Golden Eagles since hitting a school-record tying 34 at Lock Haven Feb. 25, 2009.
Heeter and Savulchak both made double-digit charity shots just the second time in school history two Golden Eagles have made double-digit foul shots in a game.
Savulchak was 11 of 13 from the line, the most made free throws by a Golden Eagle since Katrina Greer hit 11 at Lock Haven in the Feb. 25, 2009, game. Heeter, meanwhile, was 10 of 12 from the line marking the first time since Jan. 8, 2006, that Clarion has had two players make at least 10 charity shots in a contest. That game, Melba Melton connected on 13 and Greer hit 14 at West Chester.
Jasmine Boyd added nine points and
Leisha Crawford eight points, two assists and two steals for Clarion.
Emily Daugherty and Sami Lane each scored a team-high 19 for Lock Haven with Moyer adding a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Daugherty chipped in five boards and three steals with Lane handing out three assists and coming away with two steals. Moyer also had four steals.
Clarion returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Edinboro.
NOTES – The victory sealed the fifth seed in the PSAC Playoffs for Clarion, which will play either at California or at IUP in the opening round of the PSAC postseason March 2. It is Clarion's first postseason trip since 2009 … The Golden Eagles shot 46.4 percent (26 of 56) for the game to Lock Haven's 27 of 76 (35.5 percent). Clarion was 5 of 11 from three-point range with Lock Haven going 5 of 23 … Heeter's double-double was her 13
th of the season and 26
th of her career. The sophomore was named a Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American Wednesday making her Academic All-American in two sports this year (she also earned the honor in volleyball). It was also the 15
th career 15-rebound game for Heeter putting her one back of Heather Cigich's school record 16. It was her seventh 15-rebound game of the year, tying her for second in school history in a single season behind the eight she had last year … Jones' previous career high was 24 points set Jan. 29, 2011, vs. Gannon. She is the first Golden Eagle to score 30 in a game since Lizzie Suwala had 33 at Lock Haven Feb. 20, 2010.
