(CLARION, PA.): Clarion received key wins from
Tyler Fraley (Fr. Freehold, N.J.) at 125, #4 ranked
James Fleming (Sr. West Mifflin) at 157 and
Ryan Darch (So. Batavia, N.Y.) at 174 but it wasn't enough as #14 ranked Bloomsburg posted a 21-9 win over the Golden Eagles in NCAA Division I wrestling on Sunday.
Held at W.S. Tippin Gym, Clarion's record went to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the EWL, while Bloomsburg raised its record to 14-2 overall and 4-0 in the EWL.
Tyler Fraley got the Golden Eagles off to a 3-0 lead by defeating Sean Boylan 4-1 at 125. Fraley's first period takedown, third period escape and riding time provided the margin of victory.
Bloomsburg came back to win three straight matches for a 9-3 lead. #12 ranked Nick Wilcox used an escape and riding time for a 2-0 win over Clarion's
Joe Waltko (Sr. Allison Park) at 133, then
Devin Cook (Jr. Bedford) lost a 5-2 decision to Matt Rappo at 141 and
Tyler Bedelyon (Jr. Lewistown) lost a 5-1 decision to Josh Roosa at 149.
The feature matchup between Clarion's
#4 James Fleming and Bloomsburg's #11 Frank Hickman certainly didn't disappoint the 500 wrestling fans in attendance. After several good flurries in the first, Hickman scrambled for a takedown with 4 seconds left for a 2-0 lead. Hickman chose neutral in the second with no scoring. Fleming chose top in the third, and after twice getting a one count for back points, brought the crowd to its feet with a three-point near fall with a bout 50-seconds left for a 3-2 lead. With 8 seconds to go Fleming let Hickman escape to tie the match, knowing he had the bout winner with 1:48 on the riding clock to win 4-3. Following the bout Bloomsburg (Hickman) was penalized one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct and the match score showed Bloomsburg on top 8-6.
The win for Fleming gives him a 24-2 season record and a career mark of 116-18, tying former Clarion great Kurt Angle on the all-time win list. Angle had a career record of 116-10-2 from 1988-92 and was a 2-time NCAA D-I National Champ, 3-time All-American and a 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist.
Bloom's #11 Josh Veltre won a 15-4 major over
Nick Milano (Jr. Erie/Cathedral Prep) at 165, but Clarion fought back with another crowd pleasing win at 174 when
Ryan Darch defeated Chris Smith 6-5 in rideout. With the bout tied 4-4 in overtime, and neither wrestler scoring in the first overtime period, the duo went to rideout. Darch chose down and reversed Smith for a 6-4 lead. Smith escaped to make it 6-5. Smith chose down in his 30-seconds, with Darch riding Smith out for the win. The win brought Clarion to within 12-9 heading to the final three matches.
Bloomsburg's Andre Petroski scored a 4-1 decision over
Steven Cressley (Sr. Punxsutawney) at 184, #16 Richard Perry scored a 9-4 decision over Clarion's
Justin Ortega (Sr. Oxford) at 197 and the Huskies #15 ranked Justin Grant won 8-4 over
Phil Catrucco (Sr. Sharpsville) at heavyweight to win the dual meet 21-9.
Clarion returns home on Friday to host Ohio University at 7 p.m. at Tippin Gym.
