Box Score CLARION, Pa. – Despite 15 points and 20 rebounds from
Hannah Heeter and a career-best 15 points from
Mariah Gador, the Clarion University women's basketball team dropped a 67-60 decision to visiting IUP Saturday night at Tippin Gym.
For Heeter, it was her fourth 20-rebound game of her career setting the school record for 20-rebound contests and her second of the season. It was also her 12
th double-double of the year and the 25
th of her career. She had 11 points and 14 rebounds in the second half alone.
Gador, a freshman, scored 11 first-half points and topped her previous high of 13 tallies set Jan. 4 vs. West Chester.
Tania Holmes and
Raven Jones each added 12 points for Clarion (11-12 overall, 7-10 PSAC West).
But IUP (17-6, 12-5), playing without leading scorer Sarah Pastorek, got 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals from Lindsay Stamp, 17 points from Marita Mathe, including 12 in the first half, and 11 points and nine rebounds from Zhane Brooks.
IUP led 29-23 at halftime before Clarion got within two, 40-38, with 13:28 to play. But the Crimson Hawks went on 15-4 run over the next eight minutes to go up by 13, 55-42, on a Stamp free throw with 5:41 left.
Clarion didn't go away closing within six, 59-53, thanks to an 11-4 run that featured eight straight points from Heeter after a Jones three.
The game was still within six, 60-54, following a Heeter free throw. But IUP hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 41 seconds to put the game away.
Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Mercyhurst. The game is a Hooping for a Cure game for cancer awareness. There will be a survivor's recognition ceremony, an American Cancer Society booth, the women's basketball team will be holding a Chinese Auction to raise money for The Cancer Center at Clarion Hospital and the athletic department will be selling t-shirts to raise money for The Cancer Center at Clarion Hospital. NOTES – Heeter passed Mona Gaffney for the most 20-rebound games in school history. Gaffney had three … Heeter also now has 14 games of at least 15 rebounds, second in school history to Heather Cigich's 16 career games of 15 or more rebounds … It was Heeter's third straight double-double and her fifth in the last seven games … Clarion outshot IUP 42.1 percent to 39.3 percent and both teams hit eight 3-pointers. But IUP was 15 of 27 from the line while Clarion was 4 of 5 … IUP also outscored Clarion 30-11 off turnovers despite Clarion only turning the ball over three more times (20 to 17) than IUP.
