Box Score CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Clarion University women's basketball team saw its season end with a 72-42 loss to California Saturday night at Cal's Convocation Center.
The fifth-seeded Golden Eagles (13-16) were tied at 11 late in the first half before the fourth-seeded Vulcans used a half-ending 18-4 run to take a 29-15 halftime lead and then never let that advantage slip below 15 in the second half.
Hannah Heeter finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds for Clarion, her 16
th double-double of the season and the 29
th of her career and in the process set the single-season rebounding average record for the Golden Eagles with 13.3 rpg, shattering the 33-year old previous record of 12.5 set by Lisa Zitalone in 1980. Heeter also finished the year with 14.4 points per game giving her a second consecutive season double-double, the first player at Clarion to have back-to-back season double-doubles since Heather Cigich in 2003 and 2004 and just the fifth player in school history to have multiple season double-doubles. It was her 19
th double-digit rebound game in 25 games this season. Heeter also finished with 332 rebounds on the season, the third most in a season in school history.
Emma Fickel had a game-high 13 points with all 13 coming after halftime.
Raven Jones added six points with
Aleya Miller chipping in four points and eight rebounds.
Stephanie Michael led all scorers with 18 points for Cal and added four assists. Chelsea McKnight scored 15 points, and Kate Seebohm had seven points and eight assists.
There wasn't a whole lot of scoring in the early going with the team combining for 22 points in the game's first 14:30 minutes.
The game was tied at 11 following a Heeter layup with 7:20 to play in the first half, but Cal scored the game's next 11 points to take a 22-11 lead with 2:33. That lead was extended to 16, 29-13, on an Elena Atonenko jumper with 43 seconds to play in the half before a Heeter layup with 26 seconds left got Clarion back within 14, 29-15, at the break.
But Cal started the second half with an 13-4 run that pretty much put the game away.
Clarion shot just 30.8 percent (16 of 52) for the game including 1 of 13 from three-point range, while Cal shot 44.4 percent (28 of 63) including 11 of 21 (52.4 percent) from beyond the arc and 51.5 percent (17 of 33) in the second half when it hit 7 of 10 triples.
The Golden Eagles also turned the ball over a season-high 29 times with Cal scoring 32 points off those turnovers. Clarion did force 20 Vulcan giveaways but scored just 10 points off them.
Cal will face top-seeded Gannon, who had a bye, in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Erie.
NOTES – The 13 wins are the most for Clarion since 2010 … Heeter will enter her junior season averaging 12.6 rebounds per game, which would be the school record. She has 616 career boards, the 11
th most in school history … The game marked the end of three careers at Clarion – Miller,
Lauren Savulchak and
Amanda Gough. All three players played Saturday … It was the first postseason game for all 12 Golden Eagles who played including four freshman –
Mariah Gador,
Tania Holmes,
Leisha Crawford and
Jasmine Boyd … Holmes finished the year averaging 7.6 ppg while dishing out 61 assists, Gador added 6.6 ppg and 3.4 rpg, Crawford had 5.8 ppg and 53 assists and Boyd finished with 2.7 ppg and 1.9 rpg which should leave the Golden Eagles with a nice core of younger players with experience heading into next season.
