SOFTBALL DROPS TWO TO RUTGERS-CAMDEN

Kacie Nemeth singles in the sixth inning of Game Two Thursday. Nemeth had a pair of hits in the game including her first home run

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Clarion University softball team finished it spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., by dropping  pair of close contests to Rutgers-Camden Thursday afternoon.

In Game One, Rutgers-Camden scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to get a come-from-behind 5-4 victory, and then in Game Two, the Scarlet Raptors won another close contest, 4-2.

Nicole Lindner (2-for-3) and Christina Tressler (2-for-4) each had a pair of hits for Clarion (3-3) in the opener with one of Tressler's being a double. Emily Leininger, Kirsten Wilcox, Megan Anderson and Taylor Powell each drove in runs, while Kayla Henderson, Lindner, Kacie Nemeth and Leininger each scored for the Golden Eagles.

Chelsea Zola took the loss in relief of Julie Sokol. Zola went 1-plus innings allowing two runs, neither of which were earned, on four hits while striking out two. Sokol went the first five innings allowing three earned runs on five hits and five walks while striking out four.

In Game Two, Nemeth smacked her first home run of the season and the first since her freshman year in 2010 and went 2-for-3 in the game, while Henderson also had a hit and Ashley Barenchik a run scored.

Jessica Rohaus took the loss going seven innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three.

The first game saw Clarion build a 4-0 lead after an inning-and-a-half thanks to a four-run top of the second. But Rutgers-Camden (10-3) got a run back in the bottom of the second before adding two in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game at four. The Golden Eagles then had a runner cut down at home on a two-out double in the seventh, before a pair of Clarion errors helped the Scarlet-Raptors (10-3) push across the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Katie Larson singled to center after having her at bat extended when Nemeth dropped a foul ball. Sam Shockey then followed with a single to right, but Elizabeth Shiring throw to third baseman Tressler beat Larson to the bag. Tressler, though, couldn't handle the throw allowing Larson to reach safely and Shockey to take second. Kaitlyn Gaskill then followed with a drive off the centerfield fence for the game-winning single.

Clarion had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh when Lindner singled with one out. Then, with two outs, Tressler drove a ball into the left-centerfield gap, and Lindner tried to score all the way from first but was out on a bang-bang play at the plate.

The Golden Eagles jumped to the 4-0 lead thanks to a four unearned runs in the top of the second.

With one out, Lindner nearly tore the glove off the second baseman's hand with a rope that went for a single to right. Nemeth then reached on an error by the pitcher putting runners at first and second.

An out later, Leininger came through with a two-out single over the first-base bag scoring Lindner with the game's first run. Henderson then walked to load the bases, and Wilcox hit a grounder to the shortstop, who thought about throwing to third before changing her mind. At that point, everyone was safe with Nemeth scoring to make it 2-0.

Megan Anderson followed by drawing a bases-loaded walk making it 3-0, and Powell reached on an infield single making it 4-0.

Rutgers-Camden got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning with a double and two singles after one out, but Sokol limited the damage by striking out a pair with runners at second and third.

The Scarlet Raptors added two more runs in the fifth thanks to a pair of hits and a pair of walks. But once again, Sokol got two big outs with runners on second and third to preserve the lead.

Zola relieved in the sixth and was tagged for an unearned run, the game-tying run, when Jackie Leafey doubled with one out but should have been erased when she ran on contact on a grounder to shortstop Amanda Gough. Gough had an easy out at third but threw the ball away allowing Leafey to come all the way around to score. Zola then worked out of trouble retiring the final two runners with the go-ahead run at third.

In Game Two, Nemeth cranked a leadoff homer to center giving Clarion a 1-0 lead, and Barenchik followed by drawing a walk and moving to third on a pair of wild pitches.

Gough then was hit by a pitch and stole second. Henderson followed with an infield single, and Barenchik scored when the third baseman threw the ball away with Gough going to third.

But Gough was caught off third on a grounder to shortstop, and Anderson lined into a double play to end the threat.

Rutgers-Camden then took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth.

Gaskill led off the inning with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Lindsay Day walked and both runners advanced one base on another wild pitch.

Gabby Colon then lofted a fly ball to center that scored Gaskill on a sacrifice fly. Day then ended up scoring as well when Gaskill ran into Lindner, the catcher, to the first base side of home plate after she had scored knocking over the Golden Eagle backstop and allowing the ball to get past her to the backstop and Day, who had tagged and gone to third on the play, to score.

Clarion head coach Shintrika Hudson questioned the call saying Gaskill should have been called for interference, but after a discussion between the two umpires, no interference was called.

Brittany Sullivan then followed with a solo homer to center making it 3-2.

Rutgers-Camden added a run in the fifth when Leafey walked leading off and scored on a one-out double by Shockey.

Clarion had threatened in the bottom of the fourth loading the bases with two outs off of reliever Sullivan, who replaced Shockey to start the inning. But Shockey came back in with the bases loaded and got Gough to fly out to end the threat.

The Golden Eagles also had a pair of runners on in the sixth with two outs but couldn't score, and pinch hitter Lydia Middaugh drew a two-out walk in the seventh but was erased on a fielder's choice.

Clarion, weather permitting, returns to action with its home opener March 29 vs. Lock Haven.
