Box Score 2 CLARION, Pa. – A pair of Mercyhurst pitchers held Clarion's bats silent for the better part of two games Tuesday afternoon sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from the homestanding Golden Eagles by scores of 5-0 and 5-1.
In the opener, Mercyhurst's Megan Hopton threw a three-hitter, and the Lakers (15-21) scored three unearned runs off Clarion's
Chelsea Zola on their way to the win.
Mercyhurst struck for two in the first and one in the second off of Zola, who went four innings allowing three unearned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two.
The Lakers then scored a run in the fifth and another in the sixth off of freshman
Jessica Rohaus, who pitched three innings allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out three.
Clarion's best chance to score came in the first inning when the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with no one out thanks to a walk by
Kayla Henderson and back-to-back singles by
Kirsten Wilcox and
Megan Anderson. But
Amanda Gough, who entered the game as the PSAC's No. 2 hitter, grounded out sharply to second with Henderson erased at the plate and
Taylor Powell and
Nicole Lindner struck out ending the threat.
The Golden Eagles had runners in scoring position two other times.
Lindner doubled with two outs in the fourth before
Kacie Nemeth flew out to end the inning, and
Christina Tressler was hit by a pitch in the fifth with one out and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Henderson before Wilcox flew out.
In Game Two, Mercyhurst scored twice in the first, once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to go ahead 5-0 before Clarion scored once in the bottom of the seventh when Lindner reached second on an error and scored on a single to right by Nemeth.
Nemeth had one of two Golden Eagle hits in the game. The other was a one out single by Anderson in the first that put runners on first and second after Henderson led off with a walk. But Powell grounded into a fielder's choice with Henderson out at third and Lindner struck out after a wild pitch had put runners on second and third.
Julie Sokol took the loss giving up five runs, all earned, on 10 hits and two walks in seven innings of work. She struck out three.
Clarion (3-15) returns to action with a doubleheader at Slippery Rock Wednesday.
