SOFTBALL USES BATS IN GAME ONE TO EARN SPLIT MONDAY

Kirsten Wilcox had 3 hits in Game One

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALEM, W. Va. – Paced by strong offensive in Game One, the Clarion University softball team earned a split of a non-conference doubleheader at Salem International Monday afternoon.

Clarion won Game One 7-3 before dropping the nightcap 8-0 in five innings.

In the first game, the Golden Eagles knocked out 12 hits, the second-most in a contest this year, including three from Kirsten Wilcox, two reach from Nicole Lindner, Kacie Nemeth and Taylor Sherry, with Sherry smacking a home run, and a two-run home run from Amanda Gough to get a come-from-behind win.

Salem led 2-0 after two and 3-2 after three before Clarion took the lead for good in the fourth on RBI base hits from Elizabeth Shiring and Sherry. Gough then hit a two-run home run in the fifth before Lindner delivered a run-scoring single in the seventh.

Chelsea Zola and Julie Sokol combined to pitch well allowing just eight hits and two earned runs in seven innings. Zola got the win going the first four allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out three. Sokol recorded the save going the final three innings while not allowing a run. She gave up three hits and two walks and struck out one.

After Salem International grabbed the 2-0 lead off Zola in the first, Clarion tied the game with a pair of runs in the third when Sherry went deep for her first homer of the season and the fourth of her two-year career and Megan Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to score Kayla Henderson who walked and went to third on Wilcox double.

Salem retook the lead with a run in the third before Clarion took the lead for good in the fourth when Taylor Powell led off with a double and went to third on a single by Lindner. After Nemeth popped out, Shiring delivered the game-tying single before Sherry gave Clarion the lead with a single to center.

Gough hit a two-run homer in the fifth scoring Wilcox, who had doubled, to make it 6-3 before a Lindner single in the seventh drove home Gough, who had been hit by a pitch.

In Game Two, Salem was able to get the spilt thanks in large part to a no-hitter throw by Isabel Villaloboos, who walked three. Gough, Powell and Christina Tressler drew free passes for Clarion.

Kirsten Gromley took the loss going 2 1/3 innings allowing six runs, three earned, on four hits and four walks while striking out one. Sokol went the final 1 2/3 allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out two.

Clarion (4-22 overall) returns to action with its home finale Tuesday vs. IUP. It is Senior Day with Nemeth and Gough being honored inbetween games. Nemeth played career games No. 110 and 111 for the Golden Eagles Monday.
