Box Score 2 CLARION, Pa. – A pair of seventh-inning rallies fell short for the Clarion University softball team, as the Golden Eagles dropped a home-opening doubleheader to Lock Haven Saturday afternoon.
In Game One, Clarion lost 7-5 after scoring four times in the bottom of the seventh and having the tying run at the plate.
Then in the nightcap, the Golden Eagles dropped a 4-3 decision that saw it strand the tying run at second base in the bottom of the seventh.
Lock Haven grabbed a 1-0 lead in Game One with a run in the top of the second before
Nicole Lindner's second home run of the season tied the contest at one in the bottom of the inning.
But the Lady Eagles scored six in the top of the fourth to open up a 7-1 lead.
Clarion rallied in the seventh when
Elizabeth Shiring was hit by a pitch with one out. Then with two down,
Kayla Henderson walked and
Kirsten Wilcox singled to load the bases.
Megan Anderson drove home two with a single and went to second on the throw to the plate, and
Taylor Powell followed with a two-run single to bring Clarion within two.
But
Taylor Sherry struck out to end the game.
Freshman
Jessica Rohaus took the loss going four innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out one.
Chelsea Zola finished up throwing three scoreless innings walking four and allowing two hits.
Wilcox was 3-for-4 for Clarion, while Lindner was 2-for-3.
In Game Two, Clarion led 3-2 going to the sixth before a pair of solo home runs by Lock Haven in the inning but the Lady Eagles ahead 4-3.
Clarion looked to have something going in the bottom of the seventh when
Taylor Powell led off with a single and
Amanda Gough followed with a single to put runners at first and second. But the next three batters struck out ending the game.
Lock Haven once again took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the second, but Clarion answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Lindner,
Kacie Nemeth and
Christina Tressler all walked to load the bases.
Elizabeth Shiring then reached on an error by the third baseman with Lindner scoring, and an out later Wilcox beat out a ground ball to the shortstop for an RBI infield single.
Lock Haven tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth before Clarion went ahead again with a run in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Tressler singled and Henderson pinch ran before being erased on a fielder's choice by Shiring. But
Lydia Middaugh came through with a two-out double to score Shiring.
Julie Sokol took the loss going six innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out two. Zola threw another inning of scoreless relief allowing one hit.
Wilcox had three more hits going 3-for-3 giving her six on the afternoon.
Clarion (3-7 overall, 0-4 PSAC Central) returns to action with a PSAC Central doubleheader at IUP Sunday starting at noon.
