GOUGH SHINES BUT GOLDEN EAGLES DROP DH AT IUP

Amanda Gough had four hits including two doubles and a HR Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 INDIANA, Pa. – Amanda Gough had a four-hit afternoon including a home run, but it wasn't enough, as the Clarion University softball dropped a PSAC Central road doubleheader at IUP Sunday afternoon.

Gough was 4-for-6 in the double header with two RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles and the home run, but Clarion dropped the first game 2-1 and the second contest 11-3 in six innings because of the eight-run rule.

In the opener, IUP (15-8 overall, 3-3 PSAC Central) scored a run in each of the first two innings off of Clarion's Chelsea Zola, who otherwise pitched a fantastic game allowing just the two runs on four hits, only one of which came after the second inning, while striking out four. She didn't walk a batter.

Clarion (3-10, 0-6), though, failed to take advantage of some opportunities to score leaving five on base, including two in scoring position, before Gough broke the ice with a solo homer in the sixth, which turned out to be Clarion's last base runner.

Prior to the sixth, the Golden Eagles had Gough had second with one out and at third with two outs in the second after she had led off the inning by reaching on error but couldn't get her home. Then in the fourth, Gough and Nicole Lindner had back-to-back singles with one out putting runners at first and second. But two fielder's choices, the second with Gough at third, ended the threat.

Joining Gough and Lindner in the hit column in Game One were Kirsten Wilcox, and Elizabeth Shiring, who each had singles.

In Game Two, IUP struck for five runs in the first inning off of Jessica Rohaus, who went 5 2/3 innings allowing 11 runs, all earned, on 14 hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Crimson Hawks added three more runs in the third to go up 8-0 before Clarion got a pair of tallies back in the fourth when Megan Anderson singled after two outs and scored on a Gough double to right-center. Gough then came home on an infield single by Lindner after moving to third on a Taylor Powell base hit.

Clarion made it 8-3 with a run in the top of the sixth thanks to back-to-back one-out doubles by Gough and Powell. The Golden Eagles looked poised to get more when Lindner singled Powell to third still with one out. But a fly out and a strike out ended the inning.

IUP then won the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth putting the eight-run rule into action.

Gough, Powell and Lindner each had two hits and an RBI in the game with Gough scoring two runs.

Clarion returns to action when it hosts Bloomsburg in a PSAC Central doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
