SOFTBALL BATTLES BLOOMSBURG HARD BUT DROPS A PAIR

Taylor Sherry had a pair of hits in the opener for the Golden Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLARION, Pa. – Despite rallying from a 4-0 deficit in Game One to force extra innings, the Clarion University softball team was swept in a PSAC Central doubleheader by visiting Bloomsburg Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles, playing their first conference extra inning game in five years, dropped Game One 6-4 in nine innings and then lost Game Two 14-0 in five innings with the eight-run rule.

In the opener, Bloomsburg scored three times in the first and then added a run in the fourth on a home run by Chrissy Belko.

But Clarion had the answer scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at four.

With one out, Amanda Gough, who had four hits on the afternoon – two in each game – doubled. Taylor Powell was then hit by a pitch and everyone was safe when Nicole Lindner reached on a fielder's choice that saw an error on the second baseman. Kacie Nemeth then singled home a pair of runs with Lindner going to third, and Lindner scored when Nemeth stole second and there was a throwing error on the Huskies' catcher. Taylor Sherry followed with a double to center that moved Nemeth to third, and Nemeth came home on the play on an error on the centerfielder.

Both teams then had chances to win the game in regulation.

In the fifth, Kirsten Wilcox opened with a single for Clarion and moved to second on a one-out ground out by Gough. But Powell struck out to end the threat.

Bloomsburg's seventh inning saw the Huskies get a lead off single by Lea Rehm followed by a sacrifice bunt. But Clarion's Chelsea Zola got Kayla McHale to fly out with the runner moving to third and then Erika Yanora to ground out to end the inning.

The Huskies threatened but didn't score in the eighth.

Rachel Fredell led off with  walk and Belko singled putting runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners 60 feet, but Zola got Mandi Black to ground the ball sharply off Sherry's glove at third right to Gough who gunned out the runner at the plate. Raychelle Kuhns then grounded out ending the inning.

But Bloomsburg finally broke through again in the ninth when Rehm singled leading off, and Mandi Baer and McHale followed with singles that broke the tie. A Fredell sacrifice fly added an insurance run for the Huskies.

Zola took the loss in the relief of Julie Sokol. Zola went five innings allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits and a walk. Sokol threw the first four innings allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits and a walk while stirking out one.

Both Gough and Sherry were 2-for-4 to lead Clarion's offense while Nemeth was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

In Game Two, Gough managed both of Clarion's hits and was 2-for-2.

But Bloomsburg (19-7 overall, 5-1 PSAC Central) hit three homers in the game including a pair by Belko and scored three in the first, two in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Kiersten Gromley took the loss going three innings and allowing eight runs, all earned, on eight hits and four walks while striking out two. Zola threw the final two innings allowing six runs, only two earned, on seven hits while striking out two.

Clarion (3-11, 0-8) returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader at Slippery Rock Thursday.
