ERIE, Pa. – For just the fifth time in school history, the Clarion University women's volleyball team is 8-0 after a 3-1 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan at a Regional Crossover at Mercyhurst Friday afternoon.
Three Golden Eagles – Corinne Manley, Abbey Cox and Emily Stewart – each registered double-digit kills to help Clarion to the victory, which came by scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-17.
Manley, a senior middle hitter, led the way with 11 kills while hitting .400 (11 kills, 3 errors, 20 attempts). She added a pair of blocks.
Cox and Stewart each had 10 kills with Stewart completing a double-double with 12 digs, and Cox adding five blocks while hitting an incredible .556 (10-0-18).
Laura Subject ran the offense with 41 set assists while adding 14 digs, an ace and a kill.
Defensively, Morgan Seybold set the bar with 25 digs, and Lauren Magalski added 10 digs.
Hannah Heeter helped the offense with eight kills and also had four blocks, and Carlie Bieranowski chipped in with six kills.
Clarion will go for a 9-0 start, something it has only accomplished in four seasons (2007. 2002, 1973 and 1972) when it takes on West Virginia St. at 7 p.m. Friday at Mercyhurst. The 2007 squad went 12-0, the 2002 and 1972 teams were both 9-0 and the 1973 team was 15-0.
