CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion University women's volleyball team started the 2013 season with a resounding 3-0 (25-7, 25-9, 25-21) win over Goldey-Beacom in its first match of the Tony Banner Memorial Invitational Friday afternoon at Tippin Gym.
Jocelyn Uchic led a balanced Clarion offense with eight kills, while Carlie Bieranowski had six, Emily Stewart five and Corinne Manley, Kelly Shannon and Abbey Cox four each. Ten different Golden Eagles recorded kills in the match.
Laura Subject set the offense in motion with 28 set assists while adding seven digs. Morgan Seybold ran the defense with 20 digs, while Stewart chipped in with six. Manley had four blocks.
The Golden Eagles (1-0) wasted little time setting the tone in the match jumping out to a 17-4 lead on their way to a 25-7 first-set victory. Bieranowski had all six of her kills during the early stretch and only played in the first set.
In the second set, Clarion used a 13-3 run to turn a 6-5 advantage into a 19-8 lead on its way to the 25-9 win. Jocelyn Uchic paced the run with three kills.
The third set was more closely contested, although the Golden Eagles built a 16-7 lead before Goldey-Beacom rallied to within four, the last time being at 24-20.
Clarion returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Ohio Dominican. The Golden Eagles then take on Urbana at 9 a.m. Saturday and Concord at 7 p.m. Saturday.
