Box Score CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Despite three players reaching double figures, the Clarion University men's basketball team fell on the road at California (Pa.) in PSAC West action, 71-58, Wednesday night.
Mike Kromka had 13 points and eight rebounds, while
Aaron Johnson added 12 points and seven boards and
Marques Jones 10 points and three assists. But Clarion (2-11 overall, 0-5 PSAC West) couldn't overcome a 50 percent (25 of 50) shooting performance by Cal (7-9, 2-4) in losing its eighth straight game.
Jake Jacubec led Cal, which led wire-to-wire, with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Arman Marks added 12 points, four rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block. Josh Dombrosky chipped in 10 points and six rebounds with Alonzo Murphy also scoring 10 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Clarion trailed by just four, 33-29, late in the first half before Cal got the final basket of the half to take a 35-29 halftime lead. That was the start of a 9-0 Vulcan run that put them ahead by 13, 42-29, just over two minutes into the second half.
The Golden Eagles didn't go away without a fight going on a 13-3 run that saw four different Clarion players score led by four points from Kromka to get within three, 45-42 on a Kromka dunk with 12:30 to play.
Clarion was still down just four, 48-44, following a Johnson layup with 10:59 to play before an 8-0 Cal spurt over the next two minutes put the game away for good.
The Golden Eagles return to action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when they host Seton Hill in a PSAC West match. It will be Clarion's first-ever PSAC West game vs. Seton Hill.
