Box Score ERIE, Pa. – Despite 18 points and a season-high 17 rebounds from
Hannah Heeter, the Clarion University women's basketball team fell to Mercyhurst 66-49 in PSAC West play Wednesday night at Mercyhurst.
Heeter, who had a double-double at halftime with 12 points and 10 rebounds, shot 8 of 16 from the field and added one assist and a block, but a cold-shooting second half did Clarion in.
The Golden Eagles (7-10 overall, 1-6 PSAC West) trailed by nine, 33-24, at halftime but shot 8 of 32 (25 percent) in the second half while being outscored by Mercyhurst (6-11, 4-3) 33-25 in the half including 23-3 in the half's first 9:30.
That Laker run to start the second half gave them their largest lead in a game they led wire-to-wire at 56-27.
Starting the first half on a 24-8 run, Mercyhurst led by as many as 17, 31-14, in the half before Clarion finished the half on a 10-2 run thanks to seven points from
Maria Taylor, who finished with seven points and three rebounds.
Tania Holmes added 10 points for Clarion, while
Emma Fickel had five and needs eight to reach 1,000 in her career.
Adrienne Kloecker led all scorers with 23 points while adding three rebounds, three assists and two steals for Mercyhurst. Alex Artise chipped in 15 points, while Natalie Piaggesi had nine points and five rebounds.
Clarion shot 28.6 percent (18 of 63) on the night compared to Mercyhurst's 45.3 percent (24 of 53), which included 13 of 26 in the first half when the Lakers hit 5 of 12 threes. For the game, Mercyhurst hit 10 3-pointers.
The Golden Eagles return to action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Edinboro in PSAC West action.
NOTES – It marked the fourth time in her career Heeter has had a double-double before halftime. She also did it Feb. 23, 2013, at Edinboro (10 points, 12 rebounds), Feb. 15, 2012, against Lock Haven (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Jan. 25, 2012, against California (Pa.) (12 points, 10 rebounds) … It was the 36
th double-double of Heeter's career and her seventh of the season, making her the eighth junior in school history with at least seven double-doubles … The 15-rebound game was also the fourth of the season and the 21
st of her career for Heeter, who is the school-record holder in 15-rebound games.
