VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO MERCYHURST IN FIVE SETS

ERIE, Pa. - The Clarion University women's volleyball team couldn't overcome a late fifth-set run by Mercyhurst and was upset by the homestanding Lakers 3-2 in PSAC West action Friday night in Erie.

Clarion (27-3 overall, 17-2) PSAC West, trailed the match 2 sets to 1 before rallying to force a fifth-and-deciding set with a 25-19 fourth-set victory.

In the fifth set, the Golden Eagles fell behind 8-5 before rolling off four straight points on kills by Mackenzie Biggs and Catherine Ferragonio, an Abbey Cox/Laura Subject block and a Mattison Thornton dig to take a 9-8 lead.

But Mercyhurst (17-2, 12-7), playing for its PSAC playoff life, scored the next two points to take a 10-9 lead before another Ferragonio kill made it 10-10. But at that point, the Lakers scored the next three points to go ahead 13-10 and never looked back in taking the set 15-11 to win the match.

Things started out great for Clarion with the Golden Eagles cruising to a 25-14 Set One victory before Mercyhurst regathered itself and took the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-19.

Taylor Braunagel led Clarion with 14 kills, while Gabrielle Olson added 10 kills and five blocks while hitting .364. Cox chipped in with nine kills, Biggs had eight and Ferragonio eight kills and 23 digs. Carlie Bieranowski chipped in six kills and nine digs.
