JONES-CAREY NOTCHES FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN WBB LOSS AT LAKE ERIE

Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Despite the first double-double of sophomore Delrika Jones-Carey's career, which included a career-best 21 points, the Clarion University women's basketball team fell on the road at Lake Erie College, 65-51, Wednesday night.

Jones-Carey completed the double-double with 10 rebounds, the third time this season and in her career she has notched 10 carooms.

Clarion (1-10) also got 16 points, five rebounds and three steals from Tania Holmes, her ninth double-digit game of the year.

But Jones-Carey and Holmes were the only Golden Eagles to score more than five points, and Clarion was hurt by a season-high 35 turnovers.

Kayla Gabor led all scorers with 24 points for Lake Erie (7-3). She was the lone Storm player in double digits, although Daija Jones added eight points and Kaeding Skelton and Christina Dawson seven reach. Skelton also had a team-best eight rebounds with Dawson chipping in with six boards.

Clarion, which was down 11-0 right out of the gate prior to the under 16 media timeout, fought back and outscored Lake Erie 26-11 over the next 12 minutes to take a 26-22 on a jumper by Amesha Harden-Pullium with 3:55 to play in the first half. The run including an 11-0 spurt at the start that tied the game at 11 thanks to six points from Jones-Carey and five from Holmes and a second spurt of 15-2 to take the lead after Lake Erie had gone back in front 20-11. During the second run, six different Golden Eagles scored led by five points late in the run by Holmes.

Lake Erie, however, answered by closing the half on an 11-4 spurt to go ahead 33-30 at the break.

The Storm then continued the onslaught in the early stages of the second half expanding the lead to 13, 43-30, by scoring the first 10 points of the half making it a game-changing 21-4 run.

Clarion didn't go away, though, cutting the lead to four, 53-49, with 8:24 to play thanks to a 7-0 run that saw Holmes net four, Jones-Carey two and Leslie Hoy one.

But the Golden Eagles scored just two points in the final eight-plus minutes, as Clarion was 1 of 8 from the floor shooting and also turned the ball over nine times during that span.

Clarion returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cheyney before playing again at 1 p.m. Sunday at Millersville. The Golden Eagles return home for a 5:30 p.m. game Jan. 7 against Shippensburg.
