CLARION'S DALEY UPSETS #12 LAWSON/ LIONS TOP EAGLES 43-3
(University Park, Pa.): Clarion freshman heavyweight
Evan Daley (Erie/Fort LeBoeuf) upset PSU's #12 ranked heavyweight Jimmy Lawson 7-6, but the Golden Eagles fell to #2 ranked Penn State on Sunday afternoon 43-3 at Rec Hall.
A sellout, Senior Day crowd watched the three time NCAA Champions up their record to 15-1 on the season, while Clarion dropped to 9-15 in the final dual meet of the season for Clarion.
The final bout of the day definitely brought the most excitement for Eagle fans as freshman
Evan Daley defeated #12 Jimmy Lawson 7-6 for Daley's biggest win of the season. Daley opened the match with a takedown, and after a Lawson reverse, Daley escaped to lead 3-2 after one period. Daley escaped in the second and used a low ankle pick for a key takedown in the second to lead 6-3 after two periods. Daley rode Lawson over about 1:45 of the third before and escape and takedown in the final seconds tied the bout at 6-6. Daley had 2:02 of riding time and won 7-6 with the riding point.
Penn State won two technical falls to start the dual heading to 141. Clarion's
Tyler Bedelyon (Sr. Lewistown) posted the opening takedown against #2 Zain Retherford to lead 2-0. Retherford reversed and the period ended 2-2. Retherford escaped in the third for a 3-2 lead, then scored two takedowns to secure a hard fought 8-4 win against the Clarion captain.
Justin Arthur lost a 7-2 decision to James English at 149, and
Austin Matthews lost a 12-6 decision to #6 Dylan Alton at 157 to put the Lions ahead 19-0 at the intermission. Matthews scored a third period takedown to pull within 10-6, but couldn't get any closer.
Penn State's David Taylor, a national champ and 2-time NCAA runner-up at 165, pinned
Michael Pavasko at 11 seconds to get the upper weights off to a great start. #3 Matt Brown at 174, 2-time NCAA Champ #2 Ed Ruth at 184 and #3 Morgan McIntosh at 197 all flowed with wins to setup Daley's upset at heavyweight.
Clarion is off now until March 8 when the Golden Eagles travel to Cleveland State for the EWL Championships. NCAA's are set for March 20-22 at Oklahoma City.
