Box Score EDINBORO, Pa. – The Clarion University women's basketball team's playoff hopes ended Wednesday night when it fell to Edinboro, 77-56, and Seton Hill hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to knock off California, 72-69.
Clarion (11-15, 5-11 PSAC West) and Seton Hill finished tied for the sixth and final PSAC Playoff berth awarded to the PSAC West, and the team's split their regular-season meetings. Seton Hill won the tiebreakers based on a win over California, which finished fourth (the tiebreaker starts with how you do against the first-place team in your division and so on down the standings. Both teams were swept by first-place Edinboro ad second-place Gannon, but Seton Hill split with third-place California while Clarion was swept by the Vulcans).
Hannah Heeter did her best to avoid elimination recording her 15
th double-double of the season and the 44
th of her career with a season-high 26 points to go with 16 rebounds. It was the 25
th game of her career in which she has had 15 or more boards and the eighth time this season.
The big night by Heeter let her finish the season averaging 14.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per contest, the third straight year she has averaged a season double-double making her just the second player in school history to average a season double-double at least three times. Carlita Jones did so in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Heeter, a junior, will enter her senior season with 982 points and 874 rebounds in her career. She ranks fourth in school history in rebounds, and her 12.5 rebounds per game is the school record. She also sits sixth in school history in blocked shot with 87.
Freshman
Kelly Johnson added nine points, four rebounds, and three steals and finished with 355 points on the year, the fourth most in school history. The three steals also gave her 77 on the year, tied for the sixth most in school history.
Jasmine Boyd and
Emma Fickel each added five points, and
Raven Jones had a season-high eight rebounds to go with two tallies.
For Fickel and Jones, the game concluded four-year careers.
Fickel ends her career ninth in school history with 1,080 points, fourth in 3-pointers with 233 and 21
st in steals with 125.
Jones ends her career fourth in school history with 402 assists, 17
th in steals with 140 and 21
st in points with 885.
Aignee Freeland led PSAC West champion Edinboro (21-5, 15-1) with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Lauren Hippo added 14 points. Darche Jackson finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists and Valerie Majewski also finished in double figures with 11 points.
In the first half, Edinboro used an 18-4 run midway through the half to take a 39-18 lead and eventually closed out the half leading 45-22.
Clarion opened the second half on an 8-2 run, which cut the Edinboro lead to 17, on baskets from Heeter, Johnson, Fickel and Boyd. Clarion cut the lead again to 58-41 with 10:31 to go, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles got for the remainder of the game.
Despite the loss, Clarion matched Edinboro in rebounds with 38. The Fighting Scots shot 45.7 percent while the Golden Eagles were held to just 28.6 percent.
Edinboro dominated the paint outscoring Clarion 40-24 while also scoring 27 points off of 25 Golden Eagle turnovers.
