CLARION, Pa. – Behind another strong team effort, the Clarion University women's volleyball team completed a perfect 4-0 weekend at its own Tony Banner Memorial Tournament with a 3-0 win over Adelphi Saturday night at Tippin Gym.
The young Eagles once again got contributions offensively from a handful of freshman and sophomores.
Freshman Tyler Braunagel led Clarion with 14 kills while hitting .480 (14 kills, 2 errors, 25 attempts).
"We've been trying all weekend to get her to swing," Clarion's senior setter
Laura Subject, who had 29 set assists and six digs and was named tournament MVP, said about her rookie teammate. "She swung tonight, and it was amazing. She was great."
Sophomore right-side hitter
Mackenzie Biggs, who was named All-Tournament, finished off a strong weekend with nine more kills while hitting .316 (9-3-19) and adding three digs. She had 29 kills for the weekend while hitting .290 and was part of a trio of Golden Eagle sophomore or freshmen (Braunagel – 32 kills, .244 hitting and
Gabrielle Olson (26 kills, .314 hitting) to finish the weekend in the top five in kills for Clarion.
"It's been amazing," Subject said about the young players stepping up. "At times you could tell they were so young. But they really pulled through. The entire weekend was a blast. Every game was."
Senior
Carlie Bieranowski added eight kills and 11 digs while Olson had seven kills and hit .400 (7-1-15) helping the Golden Eagles hit .373 (48-10-102) for the match.
On defense,
Morgan Seybold (17 digs),
Mattison Thornton (11 digs) and
Catherine Ferragonio (10 digs) helped Clarion hold Adelphi to a .076 hitting percentage (28-22-105).
Clarion returns to action Friday and Saturday when they travel to California (Pa.) for the California Tournament. The Golden Eagles face Caldwell and Cedarville Friday before facing Fairmont St. and Rollins Saturday.
