HOLMES POURS IN 21 BUT WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS AT SETON HILL

GREENSBURG, Pa. - Tania Holmes had 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, but the Clarion University women's basketball team dropped a 73-57 PSAC West game at Seton Hill Saturday afternoon.

Holmes nailed 5 of 11 3-pointers and had her fifth 20-point game of the season, but Seton Hill had 10 players score led by 15 points from Kelly Brennan and 12 points and five rebounds from Megan Mastroianni.

Thanks to a 13-3 run in the first half, Clarion trailed by just two, 23-21, following a Delrika Jones-Carey basket with 2:40 to play in the half, but Seton Hill ended the half on a 9-2 run and then started the second half with a 17-4 run to take control of the game.

Amesha Harden-Pullium matched a season-high with 10 points for Clarion while adding five assists, five rebounds and two steals, and Jones-Carey just missed another double-double with 10 points and nine nine rebounds.

Jenna Kaufman chipped in 11 points and four rebounds for the Griffins, while Chelsea Apke added eight points and 10 rebounds, Lindsay Mifsud eight points and Jharrin Gill four points and eight helpers.

Seton Hill started off strong taking a 14-7 lead 7 ½ minutes into the game and then built the lead to 12, 20-8, with 10 minutes left in the opening half following a pair of Mastroianni 3-pointers in a span of 38 seconds.

Clarion, though, fought back with the 13-3 run that saw Jones-Carey score six of her points and Holmes hit one of her triples to cut the lead to two at the 2:40 mark.

But Seton Hill had the answer thanks layups by Cha Cha Williams, Mastroianni and Apke and a 3-pointer by Brennan to take a 32-23 halftime lead.

The Griffins then continued the roll at the start of the second half thanks to four points by Brennan and three each by Williams and Apke to take a 47-27 lead with 14:15 to play.

Seton Hill's lead grew to as many as 25, 59-34, with 10:54 to play, and the Griffins led by 24, 65-41, following a Mifsud three with 7:46 left.

But Clarion, showing a never-say-die attitude, answered with an 8-0 spurt that included threes from Harden-Pullium and Holmes, to get back within 16, 65-49, with 5:36 to play. The Golden Eagles then had a couple of opportunities to close closer but couldn't do so.

With the loss, Clarion is now 1-14 overall and 0-10 in the PSAC West, while Seton Hill moves to 6-9, 3-7 in the West with the win.

Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Mercyhurst.
