CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion University women's basketball team welcomes Mercyhurst to Tippin Gym at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday for a PSAC West contest.
The game features a pair of young squads with Clarion featuring no healthy seniors and Mercyhurst just one.
The Golden Eagles (1-14 overall, 0-10 PSAC West) are led by junior guard
Tania Holmes, who is 12
th in the PSAC in scoring at 13.8 points per game and is coming off her fifth 20-point game of the season when she netted 21 in Saturday at Seton Hill.
Mercyhurst (5-11, 3-8)
A young Golden Eagle team without a senior in the starting lineup, enters the contest at 1-14 overall and 0-10 in the PSAC West. Clarion has dropped 11 straight since picking up a 66-54 win over Ursuline Nov. 23.
Mercyhurst is paced by sophomore forward Natalie Piaggesi, who is averaging 14.4 points per game, the 10
th-best mark in the conference. Piaggesi also grabs 7.6 rebounds per contest, the 15
th-best mark in the PSAC.
Clarion is also getting a strong contribution from sophomore guard
Delrika Jones-Carey. Jones-Carey, who is averaging 10.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game this year, is scoring 16.5 points while grabbing 11.2 rebounds in her past five games with three double-doubles. She ranks seventh in the PSAC in rebounding.
The Lakers also get 13.8 points, which ranks 13
th in the PSAC, from junior guard Adrienne Kloecker.
Wednesday's game will be the 39
th meeting between Mercyhurst and Clarion with Clarion holding a 22-16 edge in the series. It's also the 13
th conference game between the schools with each team winning six teams. Last year, the squads split a pair of games each winning on its own home court. Mercyhurst got a 66-49 win in Erie, and Clarion returned the favor with an 82-64 victory at Tippin Gym.
After Wednesday, Clarion hits the road for a pair of games. The Golden Eagles will be at Edinboro at 1 p.m. Saturday and at Slippery Rock at 6 p.m. Jan. 21 before coming home for the start of a three-game home stand and four home contests in five games Jan. 24 when they host IUP.
