Game Recap: Basketball (Men's) |

LATE COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN MBB LOSS AT SLIPPERY ROCK

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - A late second-half comeback attempt came up short for the Clarion University men's basketball team in an 72-60 loss at Slippery Rock in PSAC West play Wednesday night.

The Golden Eagles trailed by 23, 57-34, with 8:54 left in the game but roared back against The Rock closing to as close as eight, 66-58, with 1:48 left to play.

But back-to-back turnovers proved to be too much for Clarion to overcome.

Slippery Rock was able to build the big lead because of a third consecutive poor road-shooting first half by Clarion.

The Golden Eagles hit just six first-half shots (6 of 27, 22.2 percent) including missing their first 14 attempts and trailed by 17, 37-20, at the break. It was the third straight road game in which Clarion made seven or fewer shots in the opening 20 minutes.

Kyheim Hall bucketed a season-high 25 points for Clarion while completing his fifth double-double of the season by adding 10 rebounds. He was 13 of 16 from the free-throw line.

BJ Andrews added eight points and Rob Agurs seven points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Antonio Butler led Slippery Rock with 21 points and seven rebounds. Frank Holloway had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Also for The Rock, Malcom Richardson scored 13 points off the bench, and Kelvin Goodwin chipped in with 11.

Trailing by the 23, Clarion came back with a 24-9 run that started with an old-school 3-point play by Justin Grant with 8:45 left and ended on a steal and basket by Agurs at the 1:48 mark. Hall had six points during the spurt with Agurs adding five and seven Golden Eagles in all scored during it.

The run helped Clarion shoot 44.8 percent (13 of 29) in the second half and 33.9 percent (19 of 56) for the game nearly matching Slippery Rock's 35.8 percent (24 of 67) from the floor. The Rock, though, hit six 3-pointers o Clarion's none, but the Golden Eagles were 22 of 28 from the charity stripe compared to Slippery Rock going 18 of 24.

But the story of the game was Clarion not being able to get the lid off the basket in the game's first nine-plus minutes. The Golden Eagles didn't make a shot from the field until Hall hit a layup with 10:39 to play in the opening half, at which point Clarion trailed 16-3.

Slippery Rock got the lead to as many as 22, 32-10, in the opening 20 minutes before a 10-2 run by Clarion closed the gap to 14, 34-20, on a pair of Andrews charity shots with 39 seconds left in the half.

The Rock, however, hit a triple by Goodwin at the first-half horn to go back up 17 at the break and took that lead back into the 20s in the first half of the second half.

Clarion returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts IUP.
