CLARION, Pa. – IUP showed why it's the No. 13 women's basketball team in the country, as the Crimson Hawks came into Tippin Gym and handed the homestanding Golden Eagles an 85-56 PSAC West loss Saturday evening.
Tania Holmes continued her good play with 16 points for Clarion (1-18 overall, 0-14 PSAC West) while adding three rebounds, two assists and a steal, and
Delrika Jones-Carey was back in double digits with 12 points and added four rebounds.
But IUP (17-1, 13-1) shot 50 percent (17 of 34) in the first half and led 47-23 at halftime before outscoring Clarion 38-33 in the second half.
Ashley Stoner led the Crimson Hawks with a game-high 21 points and scored her 1,000
th career point early in the second half after netting 17 in the opening 20 minutes. She finished the night with 1,004 career tallies, the 22
nd player in IUP history to reach 1,000 career points. Stoner completed a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Lindsay Stamp just missed a double-double for the Crimson Hawks scoring 19 points to go with nine rebounds, while Marita Mathe added 12 points.
Jasmine Boyd chipped in eight points for Clarion.
IUP started fast building a 21-10 lead a little less than seven minutes into the game, and the Crimson Hawk lead grew to as many 25, 45-20, late in the half.
The Hawks then put the game away early in the second half by scoring the first 16 points of the half to go ahead 63-23, their largest lead of the game, with 15:25 to play.
