CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Clarion men's basketball team won its sixth straight contest with an inspired effort on the road, defeating the California (Pa.) Vulcans 71-58 at the Convocation Center on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles improve to 6-2 overall on the season and are now a perfect 4-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
Rob Agurs and
BJ Andrews tied for the game-high with 14 points apiece, with Agurs going an impressive 7-of-14 from the field in 33 minutes of action. Andrews pulled in five rebounds and also added two assists and a steal.
Andre' Anthony followed up his 33-point performance against Carlow on Saturday with a 13-point effort against the Vulcans, while also contributing a team-high six assists, four rebounds and three steals.
The Golden Eagles shot 46.7 percent from the field and forced 18 turnovers on the evening. They were tenacious on the perimeter against the Vulcans, holding them to just a 3-of-16 (.188) performance from three-point range. The teams came up even in the rebounding battle with identical 35-board performances.
The win came as a result of a dominant first half from the Golden Eagles, who outscored the Vulcans 39-22 in the opening half. Cal led 10-7 in the first five minutes of play but
De'Ondre Terrell put Clarion ahead 11-10 after taking a feed from
Cameron Grumley and knocking down a jumper. Terrell set up Grumley for a basket on the next possession, swiping the ball from Luka Jusic and feeding Grumley for the transition basket to make it 13-10.
Clarion tacked on an 8-0 run later in the half to start the process of pulling away. Andrews knocked down a three-pointer to make it 23-16 and added another at the 6:54 mark to pull ahead 26-16. Anthony made a successive trio of free throws to go ahead 29-18, and Larry Johnson, Jr. scored on an and-one to push the Golden Eagles ahead 39-22 with 18 seconds left, a lead Clarion carried into the break.
The lead ballooned all the way to 31 points in the second half as the Golden Eagles went on a 16-4 run capped by an old-fashioned three-point lay by
Tim Gill. Cal cut the lead to 14 points late in the half on a lay-up by Tony Richardson but they got no closer as Clarion held them at arm's length for the win.
