CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Clarion women's basketball team outscored its opponent in the fourth quarter in a comeback attempt, but the Golden Eagles were unable to complete the rally in falling to the California (Pa.) Vulcans 67-48 on Tuesday. Clarion falls to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on the season.
Both Amesha Harden-Pulliam and
Jen Straw broke double-digits on the evening, scoring 10 points apiece. Straw shot an efficient 5-of-8 from the field and Harden-Pulliam was not far behind her, shooting 4-of-9 against the Vulcans.
Jordan Bekelja contributed nine points and a team-high four assists while
Delrika Jones-Carey collected a team-high eight rebounds.
Cal jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the game but the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run to briefly take the advantage over the Vulcans. Bekelja notched the first five points of the contest for Clarion, making a lay-up at the 8:27 mark and draining a three-pointer just 30 seconds later to tie the game. Jones-Carey took a feed from Bekelja and knocked down a jumper to take the lead and added a free throw to close the run and make it 8-5.
Clarion held the lead for a few minutes longer before the Vulcans took a 9-8 lead on a lay-up by Seairra Barrett, and Cal took a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. The deficit opened to 15 points by halftime and the Golden Eagles trailed by 22 points at the end of the third period. The Golden Eagles outpaced the Vulcans in the fourth quarter, though, with
Tyra Polite adding a game-high six points in the final 10 minutes of action.
Stevie Ray added four points on 2-of-4 shooting from the field and Straw scored four points and pulled in three rebounds in that span as well.
The Golden Eagles will next be in action on Friday, Dec. 4 when they travel to face Mansfield in PSAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
