CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion women's basketball team rallied from a first quarter deficit to rout visiting Seton Hill on Wednesday as the Golden Eagles defeated the Griffins 73-50 at Tippin Gymnasium. With the win Clarion improves to 4-8 overall and 4-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference (PSAC) action.

Both
Tania Holmes and
Tyra Polite posted double-doubles on the evening, with Holmes going off for 23 points and 10 boards and Polite 10 points and 10 caroms.Â
Delrika Jones-Carey added a game-high 24 points on a highly-efficient 12-of-16 (.750) performance from the field. Freshman point guard
Jordan Bekelja had 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals against the Griffins (5-6, 2-4 PSAC).

Overall the Golden Eagles shot 31-of-67 from the field for 46.3 percent, topping Seton Hill's 39.2 percent showing from the floor. Clarion dominated the boards with a 41-29 disparity in rebounds and forced 18 Griffin turnovers while committing just nine themselves.

Clarion trailed 17-14 at the end of the first quarter and didn't hold a lead for the final 7:20 of the period but found themselves on the attack thereafter, outscoring the Griffins 22-9 in the second and never looking back. Seton Hill did not top 12 points in any of the three remaining quarters.

Jones-Carey put the Golden Eagles ahead for good early in the second quarter, stealing the ball from Kinross Obiefule and knocking down the transition jumper at the 7:37 mark to make it 21-20. She added another make on the next possession off a feed from Holmes, and Jones-Carey concluded her personal 5-0 run with a bucket in the paint at the 6:37 mark to make it 25-20. Holmes pushed the lead to double-digits for the first time with two free throws and made it that way entering the halftime break with a lay-up on the Golden Eagles' final possession of the half, making it 36-26 at the break.

Holmes scored on a fast break with 2:49 left in the third quarter to make it a 48-38 advantage for Clarion and the lead never again dipped into the single digits.Â
Jen Straw tipped in an errant Holmes jumper to make it 50-38 and Bekelja drilled a three-pointer as time wound down in the third to make it a 57-38 advantage. The largest lead of the night came at the 2:08 mark of the fourth, when Jones-Carey drove to the hoop and laid it in to make it 71-44. She added another make with 28 seconds left, scoring on the same possession in which she swiped the ball from the Griffins, and the Golden Eagles coasted to the win.
