WRESTLING DROPS MATCHES TO APPALACHIAN STATE, BUFFALO

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion wrestling competed valiantly against a pair of high-caliber opponents, falling by scores of 31-6 to Appalachian State and 28-12 to Buffalo at Tippin Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.  The Golden Eagles fall to 4-7 overall on the season with the losses.

Brock Zacherl was the only Golden Eagle to win both of his matches on Saturday, claiming decisions against the Mountaineers' Mike Longo and the Bulls' Brandon Lapi at 141.  Zacherl went ahead 2-0 with an early takedown against Longo, and the proceedings were tied at 2-2 after Longo logged escape points in the first and second periods.  Zacherl escaped Longo's grasp to start the period to go up 3-2 and promptly took him down to open up a three-point lead and hold on for the win.

Later in the afternoon, Zacherl earned the decision over Lapi in a defensive struggle.  Zacherl tried to crack Lapi's defenses and earned two points in the second period as a result of Lapi's stall tactics.  Leading 4-2 entering the third period, Zacherl started in the down position and escaped Lapi's grasp to win the decision 5-3.

The Golden Eagles opened up strongly against the Bulls in the second match of the day, starting with Michael Pavasko's decision over Austin Weigel at 174.  Weigel led Pavasko 4-3 early in the third period but Pavasko tied it on an escape and immediately brought Weigel down for two points, making it 7-4.  Weigel got an escape point but Pavasko emerged the bout as the victor.

Dominic Rigous was the next Golden Eagle to notch a win, scoring two points on a tremendous reversal late in the third period to get a decision over Joe Ariola at 184..  Rigous trailed Ariola 4-3 but was able to turn the tables on Ariola with a reverse with less than 20 seconds remaining, taking two points for the 5-4 decision.

The Bulls won the next four matches on the docket before Brock Zacherl's vitory over Lapi.  Brodie Zacherl followed that up with a spirited decision at 149 over Sean Peacocks.  Peacocks led Zacherl 3-2 in the third period and was on pace for the riding point as well, but Zacherl managed to take down Peacocks late in the match.  He kept Peacocks down long enough to negate the riding point, winning the bout 4-3.

Dustin Conti put the Golden Eagles on the board against Appalachian State in the early match, taking a 2-0 decision over Randall Diabe at 197.  Neither wrestler was able to notch a point in the first two periods, but Conti put on a display in the second period by riding Diabe for the full two-minute duration.  Conti earned the escape point to start the third period and kept Diabe at a distance for the remainder, winning the 2-0 decision.

The Mountaineers were in control of the team match, otherwise, claiming a pair of technical falls and a major decision en route to the win.  The official clincher for the team win came in the 157 match when Angel Najar earned a 10-4 decision over Clarion's Jake Keller.  That gave Appalachian State 26 team points and officially put the team match out of reach for the Golden Eagles.
