CLARION, Pa. – Despite double-doubles by both
Jen Straw and
Delrika Jones-Carey, the Clarion University women's basketball team fell, 81-51, to visiting Edinboro Wednesday evening at Tippin Gym.
Straw recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds while adding four assists and a block, while Jones-Carey picked up her second straight double-double and her seventh of the season with a team-high 18 points to go with 11 rebounds. The seven double-doubles moves her into sole possession for the sixth most double-doubles by a sophomore in school history.
Kari Steuer also had a solid game with 13 points, two rebounds and steal, all in just 11 minutes of second-half action. It was a career-high in points for the freshman, who more than doubled her previous best of six, done twice.
The Golden Eagles (2-23, 1-19 PSAC West), though, couldn't overcome a cold-shooting first half that saw Clarion hit just 7 of 31 shots (22.6 percent) including just 3 of 23 to start the game. That allowed Edinboro (18-7, 15-6) to go on a 28-5 run in the first half to take a 41-15 halftime lead.
Clarion played much better in the second half and was just outscored by four, 40-36, in the half. Seven of Straw's points came after halftime, and
Tania Holmes had all seven of her tallies in the half as well. Holmes added four boards and three assists.
Amesha Harden-Pullium also had three helpers to go with three steals, while
Cara Cook grabbed had a career-best six rebounds.
Edinboro nearly got a triple-double from Laurel Lindsay, who had 23 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. Valerie Majewski had 15 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Lauren Hippo added 13 points and five rebounds and Aignee' Freeland 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Clarion returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday. It will be Senior Day and the final home game of the year for the Golden Eagles.
