INDIANA, Pa. –
Tania Holmes became the first Clarion University women's basketball player to finish a season averaging at least 15 points per game when she netted a team-best 18 Wednesday at IUP, but the homestanding Crimson Hawks had three players score in double figures to get an 83-59 win.
The victory secured the PSAC West title for IUP, the seventh-ranked team in the nation and the second-ranked team in the Atlantic Region.
Holmes tried her best not to let that happen netting the 18 points to go with three assists and a steal. She finished the season averaging 15.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game and is the first Golden Eagle to average at least 15 points per game since Lizzie Suwala scored 18.1 and Bethany Koch 16.3 points per contest in 2010.
Jen Straw added 10 points and eight rebounds for Clarion (2-25, 1-21 PSAC West), while
Delrika Jones-Carey had nine points and five rebounds and
Cara Cook and
Amesha Harden-Pullium eight points each.
Lindsay Stamp led all scorers with 21 points for IUP (24-2, 20-2), while Ashley Stoner had 15 points and Lisa Burton 10.
IUP built a 39-25 halftime lead thanks to a half-ending 14-4 run. The Crimson Hawks then expanded the lead to as many as 28 a few times late in the contest.
