Feb. 7, 2015 Cal women's notes

Basketball (Women's) | 2/6/2015 4:42:00 PM

CLARION, Pa. – In a rare non-doubleheader conference contest, the Clarion University women's basketball team will travel to California (Pa.) for a 1 p.m. PSAC West game Sunday.

The game was originally slated to be part of a doubleheader with the schools' men's teams Saturday but was moved to Sunday so the Cal team can attend the funeral of fallen teammate Shanice Clark, who passed away Jan. 16. The funeral and viewing are Friday and Saturday in Toronto.

A broadcast of the game can be heard locally on 91.7 FM, WCUC and on the internet here. Live stats are available here, with game notes available here

Clarion (2-19 overall, 1-15 PSAC West) comes into the game off a 73-63 loss to Seton Hill Wednesday, while Cal (18-3, 15-2), the first-place team in the PSAC West, blew out IUP, 76-45, Wednesday. This is the second meeting of the year between the teams with Cal taking home a 72-61 win Dec. 6 in Clarion behind 19 points from Emma Mahady and 13 from Katilynn Fratz. Tania Holmes led Clarion with 22 points, while Delrika Jones-Carey had 16 points and seven rebounds and Hannah Heeter 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Holmes is Clarion's leader and is the fifth-leading scorer in the PSAC at 15.9 ppg while also ranking fifth in the conference with 2.2 spg. She is coming off a 21-point effort and is averaging 21 ppg in her last seven games.

Jones-Carey also has been playing well and ranks 10th in the PSAC in rebounding with 8.3 rpg while adding 11.2 ppg. She is coming off her fifth double-double of the season, tying her for the seventh-most double-doubles in a season by a sophomore in school history, when she recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds vs. Seton Hill.

Mahady and Miki Glenn lead Cal averaging 15.6 ppg each with Mahady adding 6.1 rpg. Fratz chips in with 12.2 ppg.

Clarion is looking for its first win at Cal since a 60-58 victory over the Vulcans Feb. 4, 1998.  The Golden Eagles have dropped 19 in a row to the Vulcans in California.

After Sunday, Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Gannon.
