CLARION DROPS 26-9 MATCH AGAINST WEST VIRGINIA
(CLARION): Clarion's
Slade Horner (Jr. Ridgway) at 165 and
Michael Pavasko (Jr. Munhall/Steel Valley) at 174 got the Golden Eagles off to a 6-0 lead tonight in the first two bouts, and
Evan DeLong (Fr. Kane) at 157 capped the match with a win, but West Virginia posted 7 wins overall and a 26-9 win over Clarion at Waldo S. Tippin Gym in an NCAA Division I Dual meet.
Clarion dropped to 1-14 overall, while West Virginia upped their record to 7-7.
The night started with promise when
Slade Horner opened the dual with a 7-2 win over Tim Wheeling at 165. Horner had a first period takedown and a three point near fall in the second to go ahead 5-1 and coasted in from there. Horner is now 14-9 this season.
Pavasko, who raised his record to 19-10 at 174, gave the Golden Eagles a 6-0 lead when he won a 3-2 decision over Parker VonEgidy. Pavasko built a 3-0 lead with an escape and a takedown in the second, but held on for a 3-2 win after VonEgidy escaped in the third.
The next two bouts shaped the dual, as the Eagles
Daniel Sutherland lost a 3-1 overtime decision to Bubba Scheffel at 184 and
Ryan Darch lost a 3-1 overtime decision to Jake A. Smith at 197. Both bouts were tied 1-1 in regulation, and WVU gained takedowns late in both overtimes. The wins tied the dual at 6-6, but turned the tide for the Mountaineers.
Joshua Davis lost a 6-1 decision to AJ Vizcarrondo at 285,
Hunter Jones lost a 15-6 major decision to Zeke Moisey at 125 and West Virginia went on a roll.
Clarion freshmen
Brodie Zacherl (Brookville) and Evan DeLong (Kane) wrestled well tonight to finish the dual.
Zacherl was tied 2-2 in the third period with 1:17 on the riding clock, and chose down to start the period. He could not escape and was turned for a 2-point near fall with 5 seconds left to give Roman Perryman a 4-2 win at 149.
DeLong won the final bout, a 4-3 victory over Brutus Scheffel at 157. DeLong's takedown in the second gave him a 3-0 lead, but ab escape by Scheffel and a reversal in the third tied the match at 3-3. With 25-seconds left DeLong scored an escape and won 4-3, raising his season record to 12-19.
Clarion will wrestle at Pitt on Sunday with the match set at Fitzgerald Field House at 2pm.
