ANDREWS, GRANT HAVE NICE GAMES BUT MEN'S BBALL FALLS AT CAL 90-70

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - Despite 20 points from BJ Andrews and 18 from Justin Grant, the Clarion University men's basketball team couldn't overcome a cold-shooting first half and dropped a 90-70 decision at California (Pa.) Saturday.

The Golden Eagles (8-12 overall, 6-11 PSAC West) trailed 40-23 at halftime after hitting just 7 of 25 (28 percent) of their first-half shots while the Vulcans (13-10, 9-9) shot 53.3 percent (16 of 30) in the opening 20 minutes.

Clarion was then never able to get closer than 11, 55-44, in the second half despite shooting nearly 50 percent (16 of 33, 48.5 percent) in the half. Andrews had 15 of his 20 tallies after halftime recording his second consecutive 20-point game, his third in four games and his fourth of the season.

Grant, meanwhile, had his second-best scoring game of the season. Darius Stevens chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles and freshman Cameron Grumley had seven points and a career-best five steals.

Cal, though, had six players reach double figures.

Khalil led the Vulcans with 16 points and eight rebounds, Daniel Sapp added 12 points and six boards, Richard Smith and Calvin Brown each had 11 tallies and Drew Cook and Arman Marks each scored 10 points.

Clarion trailed from the outset getting down 19-5 with the Golden Eagles making just two baskets, a Brandon Williams layup and an Andrews jumper, in the game's first 10-plus minutes.

The Golden Eagles were able to claw back within seven, 26-19, with just under 5 ½ minutes left in the first half, but Cal ended the half with a 14-4 run to take the 17-point halftime lead.

The loss coupled with Pitt-Johnstown's win over Seton Hill leaves the Golden Eagles two games out of a PSAC playoff berth with five PSAC games left. The first of those contests is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when Clarion hosts Gannon.
