DANVER GRANNY HELPS BASEBALL SPLIT WITH UPJ MONDAY

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Derek Danver's sixth-inning grand slam in game one helped the Clarion University baseball team earn a split of a PSAC West doubleheader at Pitt-Johnstown Monday afternoon.

Danver's big blast highlighted a six-run sixth inning for Clarion (4-13 overall, 2-8 PSAC West), who won game one 10-9. The Golden Eagles then dropped the second game, 11-3, to the Mountain Cats (4-22, 4-8).

In Game One, Clarion overcame deficits of 6-0 and 8-3 thanks in large part to the six-run sixth to get the victory, its second in a row over UPJ.

Trailing 8-3 going to the sixth, five of the first six batters reached base safely for the Golden Eagles despite the ball not leaving the infield. An RBI pinch-hit walk by Tyler Delval and an RBI single to shortstop with the bases loaded by Tyler Falk brought Clarion back within three, 8-5. Danver then hit his second home run in a as many days and his first career grand slam to give the Golden Eagles the lead, 9-8.

An insurance run in the seventh, when Drew Pirritano walked, stole second and third and scored on a Falk groundout to shortstop proved to be important, when Pitt-Johnstown got the first two batters on in the bottom of the seventh thanks to back-to-back singles. A groundout to third moved the runners up 90 feet each, but when Nico Pecora grounded a ball to shortstop Joey Lopez that scored Luke Williams from third, Sean Sleigh was thrown out at third by Lopez. Pecora was then caught off first base on what went down as a catcher Austin Mike to second baseman Danver to first baseman Falk caught stealing to end the game.

Falk had a big day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a run scored and four RBIs. Danver was 2-for-3 with the grand slam, four RBIs and a run scored, while Josh Ponsoll was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Pirritano scored three runs and Lopez and Joe Holmberg two each.

Clarion trailed 6-0 after four innings before scoring three times in the fifth to cut the lead in half thanks to a two-run single by Falk and Ponsoll getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. But the Mountain Cats got a pair of those runs back in the bottom of the inning to go back ahead by five, 8-3.

Kyle Armagost, the Golden Eagles third pitcher, got the win, the first of his collegiate career, going the final 2 ? innings allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout. Troy Kumar started lasting 3 ? innings and giving up six runs, all earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out one. Chase Gorski went 1 ? innings allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits and a walk while striking out one.

Game two was close for for a while with Clarion leading 3-2 going to the bottom of the third before a three-run third by Pitt-Johnstown put the Mountain Cats up 5-3. The game stayed at -3 until the sixth when UPJ scored six runs to turn the game into a blowout.

After trailing 2-0 following the first inning, the Golden Eagles tied the game in the second on a sacrifice fly by Austin Mike and a Holmberg single. A solo home run by Delval in the third then put Clarion in front for the only time in the contest.

Pirritano extended his hitting streak to five games, he has hit safely in 10 of 11, with a 2-for-4 performance. Delval was 1-for-3 with the home run and a pair of runs scored, while Ponsoll also scored a run.

Sean White took the loss giving up five runs, four earned, in five inning of work. He allowed seven hits and a walk while striking out three. Alex Borofski pitched ? of an inning allowing two runs on two walks. Armagost came back and was ineffective in the second game allowing four runs on three hits and a walk without getting an out. Brendan Fitzgerald finished up pitching ? of an inning and allowing two hits.

Clarion returns to action with a doubleheader at Seton Hill Friday.
