BASEBALL DROPS A PAIR OF 5-3 DECISIONS TO EAST STROUDSBURG TO OPEN SEASON

WILSON, N.C. - The Clarion University baseball team started the season by dropping a pair of 5-3 decisions to East Stroudsburg in Wilson, N.C. Saturday night.

In game one, East Stroudsburg broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth and then held off a Clarion rally in the seventh.

Then in the nightcap, the Warriors rallied again from two early deficits to get the second 5-3 victory when they broke a 2-all tie with a pair of runs in the seventh.

In the first game, Drew Pirritano scored a pair of runs for Clarion, while Tyler Falk drove home a pair of runs.

In the second game, Falk, Austin Mike and Joe Holmberg all scored for the Golden Eagles.

Clarion scored first in the opener when Pirritano opened the season by getting hit by a pitch in the top of the first, moved to second on a Jordan Mesocraco sacrifice bunt and scored on a Falk single.

After East Stroudsburg tied the game with a run in the second, Clarion used pretty much the same script in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.

This time, with one out, Pirritano was again plunked with an offering. He went to second on a Mesocraco ground out and scored on a two-out double by Falk.

The Warriors answered with their second run in the bottom of the third, and then they scored three times in the fifth while forcing Clarion to use three pitcher in the inning.

Starter and loser Tyler Delval faced the first four batters retiring just one.

Jason Gerland relieved and was able to get one out before Kyle Armagost came in and closed out the inning.

The Golden Eagles tried to rally in the seventh with Joey Lopez singled leading off and eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Pirritano also reached on a walk and moved all the way to third on a pair of wild pitches, and Falk drew a two-out walk to put the tying run at first. But Falk was caught stealing with Mike Lockhart at the plate ending the game.

Falk finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while also drawing the walk. Pirritano was 0-for-1 but was on base three times with the two hit-by-pitches and the walk while scoring twice. Lopez also had a pair of singles in three at bats for Clarion with the run scored.

Delval went 4 ? innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out six. Armagost threw 1 ? innings allowing no hits and striking out two.

In game two, East Stroudsburg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before Clarion took its first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

With one out, Mike reached on an error and moved to second when Lopez walked. A wild pitch moved him to third before he scored when Joe Holmberg grounded into a fielder's choice with Lopez out at second. Pirritano then singled Holmberg to second, and a wild pitch moved each runner up 90 feet before a balk scored Holmberg.

East Stroudsburg tied the game with a run in the third, but Clarion again answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning when a pair of Warrior errors allowed Falk to score with the second error coming on a grounder to short by Ben Thomas.

East Stroudsburg again tied the game with a run in the fourth off of Troy Kumar and then got to Armagost for a pair of runs in the seventh thanks to three hits.

Armagost took the loss going one inning and allowing the two runs on the three hits while striking out two.

Kumar threw the first six innings giving up three runs, two earned, on just two hits, although both of the knocks led to runs. He walked three and struck out four.

Pirritano, Falk and Lopez had hits for Clarion.

The Golden Eagles return to action with a pair of games Sunday in Wilson. Clarion plays Kutztown in the morning then turns around and faces Pitt-Johnstown Sunday afternoon.
