Box Score 3 WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Clarion University softball team gave first-year head coach
Cheryl Peterson her first collegiate win as a head coach with a 9-5 win over Elizabeth City State Monday evening in Wilmington, N.C. as part of the Shaw Softball Challenge.
The victory came in the third game of the day for the Golden Eagles (1-5), who lost to Edinboro, 5-0, and Shepherd, 9-1, prior to getting the victory.
In the Elizabeth City State game, Clarion fell behind 2-0 after a ½ inning but tied the game with two runs in the second and then took the lead with five in the third before adding a pair of runs in the fourth after ECS got back within two with three runs in the fourth.
Lyndsey Jones got the win for the Golden Eagles pitching 1 2/3 innings in relief of
Sarah Gossard, who went 3-plus innings.
Paige Baker then picked up the save going the final 2 1/3 innings and getting out of a two-on, two-out jam in the fifth.
Carra Stevens,
Kayla Henderson and
Casey Wilcox each had a pair of RBIs for Clarion.
The Golden Eagles first two runs came in the second when
Ashley Hummel tripled home Wilcox, who had singled, and Stevens doubled home Hummel.
Clarion then took the lead in the third when
Megan Anderson led off with a triple and
Christina Tressler reached on an error and stole second.
Taylor Powell then singled home Anderson, and Wilcox singled home Tressler. After a passed ball and a walk to
Lydia Middaugh loaded the bases, Stevens singled home Powell and
Kayla Henderson doubled home a pair of run.
After Elizabeth City got back in the game with three-run fourth, the Golden Eagles got two of the runs back in the bottom of the inning when Wilcox singled home
Audrey Hummel put a ball in play tha scored Tressler.
The day started with the 5-0 loss to Edinboro with Baker taking the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in four innings.
Clarion had two hits in the game including a double by Tressler.
The Golden Eagles then dropped the 9-1 decision to Shepherd with
Shawnna Crago taking the loss.
Clarion's run came in the sixth when
Kayla Henderson singled, stole second and was sacrificed to third before Anderson doubled her home.
The Golden Eagles return to action with a doubleheader at Holy Family Saturday.
